Quinnipiac All-American, Former Associate Head Coach Spent Two Seasons in NHL
- REID CASHMAN NAMED KOENIG FAMILY HEAD COACH OF MEN'S HOCKEY
HANOVER, N.H. – Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defenseman and associate head coach Reid Cashman '07 has been hired as the head coach of the Dartmouth men's ice hockey team, as announced by Dartmouth on Monday, June 1.
Cashman joins the Big Green after spending four seasons in the Washington Capitals organization, with two as an assistant coach for the Capitals and two for their AHL affiliate in Hershey.
"I am excited for Reid and this opportunity with Dartmouth," Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold said. "He has done so much for the Quinnipiac program as both a player and a coach. Reid was a big reason for both our Frozen Four runs."
Cashman is the second former Quinnipiac assistant coach under Rand Pecknold to become a head coach in college hockey, joining Kyle Wallack who just completed the inaugural season of hockey at Division III Albertus Magnus.
While in the Washington organization, Cashman was integral in bringing along the franchise's young talent, as he was responsible for building staff and running the Capitals' Development Camps. On the bench with the Caps, Cashman oversaw the defense and penalty kill. Under his guidance this season, Washington blueliner John Carlson was the NHL leader in both points (75) and assists (60) by a defenseman at the time of the stoppage.
He helped guide Quinnipiac to 129 wins during his time in Hamden where the Bobcats won three Cleary Cups for the ECAC Hockey Regular Season Championship and one Whitelaw Cup for the ECAC Hockey Tournament Championship in 2016.
He worked primarily with the defense while at Quinnipiac, which never allowed more than 2.45 goals per game in his time. In his second season at Quinnipiac, the defense led the nation allowing just 1.67 goals per game. By his final season in 2015-16, Quinnipiac defensemen scored 32 goals to lead the nation while they ranked third with 122 total points.
"I have had the pleasure of knowing Reid Cashman for the past seven years. I am honored and humbled to call him a mentor and a true friend," former Bobcat Devon Toews '17 said. "His ability to challenge and support you as a player and a person is unmatched. His ascent through the coaching ranks is because of his willingness to listen and learn just as much as his ability to coach.
"Reid has been a major influence throughout my life and I believe he will have the opportunity to influence many others throughout his time at Dartmouth."
A 2007 graduate of Quinnipiac, Cashman was a three-time All-American from 2005-07 and was the only defenseman ranked in the top 20 in scoring over his final two seasons. He wrapped up his career as Quinnipiac's all-time leader with 125 assists and points by a defenseman with 148. He also ranks eighth overall in program history in points.
Following his Quinnipiac playing career, Cashman signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and spent parts of two seasons with the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs AHL Affiliate. He also played for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and Milwaukee Admirals in the AHL, as well as the Columbia Inferno, Wheeling Nailers and Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. Cashman concluded his career with EHC Linz of the EBEL in Europe.
