Bobcats' Netminder Earns Award Voted on By Teammates and Coaches
HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac men's ice hockey concluded its team awards presentation Friday as junior goaltender Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) has been named the program's Most Valuable Player, as voted on by his teammates and coaching staff.
Petruzzelli is just the fifth goaltender since the 1994-95 season to be named a season's MVP, and second straight after Chase Priskie '19 and Andrew Shortridge shared MVP honors for the 2018-19 season.
Among Quinnipiac's MVPs, several have gone on to sign NHL contracts and play in NHL games in their professional careers.
In his first season as Quinnipiac's starting goaltender, Petruzzelli started all 34 games and posted a record of 21-10-2 with a 2.01 GAA and .920 save percentage with three shutouts. He ranked third in ECAC Hockey in GAA and wins, tied for fourth in shutouts and saves with 761, and fifth in save percentage.
Petruzzelli ended the season on a strong note, as he guided the Bobcats to a 15-4-1 record over the final 20 games after they were 6-7-1 through the first 14. Petruzzelli tied for the league lead with 15 wins since Nov. 30, was third with a 1.76 GAA and .929 save percentage.
The month of February was by far the best of his career as Petruzzelli went 6-2-1 with a 1.56 GAA and .937 save percentage as he positioned the Bobcats for a strong postseason run that was cut short by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
In his career, Petruzzelli is now 34-19-4 in 65 games and 58 starts with a 2.31 GAA and .910 save percentage. He's recorded six shutouts in his career, three in each of the last two seasons. The 2019-20 season saw Petruzzelli play, start and win more games than he had in his first two seasons combined.
