Warfel Free Throw Lifts Quinnipiac to Win
HAMDEN, Conn. – Senior Paige Warfel hit a free throw with 0.9 seconds to play to lift the Quinnipiac women's basketball team to a 70-69 win over Saint Peter's on Thursday evening.
Warfel rebounded a Mackenzie DeWees layup and was fouled just before the buzzer. Saint Peter's had one final inbound from half court after Warfel missed the second free throw, but the Bobcats stole the pass and closed out the win.
Fellow senior Jaden Ward had a career night with a season-high 13 points and career bests in rebounds (9), assists (3), blocks (3), and steals (3).

- Saint Peter's controlled the scoreboard in the game's opening frame, despite taking six less field goal attempts than the Bobcats. Quinnipiac went 3-10 from the free throw line in the first quarter, which contributed to Saint Peter's' 19-13 lead at the break.
- The Peacocks also knocked down three three-pointers in the first quarter while Quinnipiac shot 5-21 overall.
- The Saint Peter's lead grew to seven to open the second quarter before the Bobcats scored seven straight points to narrow the lead to one point. Taylor Herd scored five of the seven points in the quick run.
- The Bobcats took the lead on a Cur'Tiera Haywood three-pointer with 3:57 left in the quarter, but Saint Peter's finished on a 10-2 run to take a 37-30 lead into the break.
- Quinnipiac immediately cut into the Peacocks' lead to open the third quarter, but Saint Peter's would maintain a five-point edge with 3:40 left in the frame.
- Haywood cut it to four with a jumper and Ward shrunk it to two with a layup at the 2:14 mark.
- After a Saint Peter's free throw, Haywood made another layup and Herd hit her fourth three-pointer of the game to give the Bobcats a 51-49 lead.
- Gabrielle Harris beat the buzzer with a layup to send the teams to the fourth quarter locked in a 51-51 tie.
- The fourth quarter featured five lead changes before two Taylor Herd free throws gave the Bobcats a four-point lead with 36 seconds left.
- Saint Peter's got a layup from Zoe Pero out of a timeout and then immediately forced a turnover on Quinnipiac's ensuing possesion as Mikala Morris was called for a charge.
- The Peacocks tied the game with 13 seconds left on a layup by Briyanah Richardson before Warfel's heroics at the free throw line finished the win for the hosts.
- Herd hit four three-pointers for the fifth time this season. Her career high is five, which she achieved against Fairfield on January 3, 2019.
- Herd added six rebounds in the win while totaling 18 points.
- DeWees finished the night with 12 points, along with six rebounds, five assists, and zero turnovers. The sophomore guard has pulled down at least six rebounds in each of her last nine games.
- Morris, the two-time defending MAAC Rookie of the Week, earned her third double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
- Warfel continued her torrid pace on the boards as she tallied 12 more rebounds to keep her inside the top 25 in the nation.
