Tufto Named League's First Star, de Jong Named Second Star After Impressive Weeks
ALBANY, N.Y. – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey senior captain Odeen Tufto (Chaska, Minnesota) has been named the ECAC Hockey First Star of the Week and junior Ethan de Jong (North Vancouver, British Columbia) has been named the Second Star, as announced by the league office on Monday, Dec. 28.
Tufto's league honor is the seventh weekly honor of his career after previously earning four player of the week and two rookie of the week honors while de Jong's is just his second after earning a rookie of the week honors in 2018-19.
This week also marks the second straight week Quinnipiac has taken home the top two stars of the week as Zach Metsa (Delafield, Wisconsin) and Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Massachusetts) earned the First and Second Stars, respectively, last week. Colgate's Matt Verboon was named this week's third star.
Tufto led the nation with nine assists and 10 points over the past week, as well as seven power-play assists, eight power-play points. He also led all centers with more than one game with 54 faceoff wins and a .701 faceoff win percentage.
He had points in all four games during the week, including tying his career-high with four assists in an 8-3 win over then-No. 19 AIC on Dec. 26. He is currently riding a five-game point streak and has points in seven of eight games.
Tufto also became the eighth player in program history to record 100 career assists during the week and now ranks seventh in program history and fourth in Division I program history with 103 career assists.
Overall in 2020-21, Tufto leads the nation with 13 assists and 15 points as well as his averages of 1.62 assists per game and 1.88 points per game. Tufto also leads the nation with eight power-play assists and nine power-play points, and is third among centers with a .674 faceoff percentage.
de Jong had the most impressive week of his Quinnipiac career as he scored power-play goals in all four games and had three straight multi-point games to end the week. He now has goals in five straight games overall.
He tied teammates Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colorado) and Desi Burgart (North Vancouver, British Columbia) for the national lead with four goals, and was the only player in the nation with four power-play goals and 17 shots on goal. He also tied teammate Peter DiLiberatore (Bedford, Nova Scotia) for second in the nation with seven points.
So far this season, de Jong leads the nation with five power-play goals and is tied for 12th with five goals overall. He is also tied for 22nd in the nation, and third on the team, with nine points.
The No. 12 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team is back in action this week with the first conference games of the season as the Bobcats travel to Canton, New York, to face the St. Lawrence Saints at 4 p.m. on New Year's Eve before returning to Hamden for a 1 p.m. showdown at Frank Perrotti Jr. Arena.
