Bobcats Defeat Big East Foe Providence

HAMDEN, Conn. – Junior Rose Caverly matched a career high with 20 points and sophomore Mikala Morris scored 17 to guide Quinnipiac women's basketball to a 71-65 win over Providence in Wednesday's season opener.

Junior guard Mackenzie DeWees led the Bobcats on the boards with a career-best 14 rebounds. Eight of the ten Bobcats that took the floor scored at least two points.

GAME SUMMARY

After the teams settled into the game's opening minutes, Cur'Tiera Haywood opened the scoring with a three-pointer off a Caverly assist.
Providence opened up its largest lead, four points, in the first quarter, but the teams ultimately hit the first break knotted at 15.
The Bobcats opened the second quarter on a 7-2 run, only to see Providence respond and cut the lead to 24-23 on a Kyra Spiwak layup at the 5:29 mark.
Vanessa Udoij's layup on the next possession sparked a 16-4 Quinnipiac run that gave the Bobcats a 40-27 advantage at halftime.
The Friars responded to the Quinnipiac run with a strong third quarter, outscoring the Bobcats 23-15, thanks to 50 percent shooting from the field (8-16). Spiwak scored ten straight points to open the frame for the visitors.
After pulling to within two points at multiple times in the fourth quarter, the Friars took a 63-62 lead on a Mary Baskerville layup with 2:32 to play.
Coming out of a timeout, sophomore Sajada Bonner hit a massive three pointer to retake the lead, 65-63.
Following a game-tying bucket by Providence, Rose Caverly hit two free throws, Mikala Morris earned a steal, and Caverly hit four more freebies in the final minute to seal the deal for the Bobcats.

NUMBERS AND NOTES

First year Nasserine William made her collegiate debut in the contest, while Caverly made her first appearance as a Bobcat after transferring from Vermont.
Udoji returned to action 1,090 days after her last appearance after missing two and a half years with injuries.
Caverly was a perfect 10-10 from the free throw line in the win.
The Bobcats shot 52.6 percent from the floor in the second quarter, making 10 of 19 field goal attempts.
