HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac field hockey team kicks off the 2019 regular season with a three-game road trip to California where the Bobcats will face a trio of teams in their first-ever regular season road trip to the Golden State.
2018 Recap
The Bobcats concluded the 2018 season on a three-game winning streak to finish 7-10 and 2-5 in BIG EAST play, with its seven wins good for its most overall since joining the BIG EAST in 2016. Quinnipiac was led by Brooke Whipkey with six goals and 15 points while Amanda Blum was second with five goals and 13 points. The Bobcats won back-to-back games three times throughout the season, including its three-game win streak to close it out.
Scouting California
California went 5-12 in 2018 and was 2-4 against the America East West Division before coming up short against Maine in the first round of the America East playoffs. The Bears won both matchups with UC Davis but lost both matchups with Stanford and Pacific. California was picked to finish second in the America East West Division for 2019, and return leading scorer Megan Rodgers who tallied 13 goals and four assists for 30 points.
All-Time vs. California
Quinnipiac is 0-2 all-time against California in two matchups since the 2001 season. The Bobcats came up just short in 2017 with a 3-2 loss in Hamden, despite a game-opening tally from Dayna Barlow '17 and a late tally from Anna Walmsley '18. Quinnipiac fell in the first-ever matchup between the two teams in the play-in game of the NCAA Tournament in 2001 with the Bears winning, 5-1.
Scouting UC Davis
The Aggies finished the 2018 season with a 6-13 record but went 0-6 against America East West Division opponents. UC Davis returns its top five scorers from 2018, including leading scorer Eline van den Bosch who posted eight goals and three assists for 19 points. Goalkeeper Chelsea Bigelow also returns to the team after 111 saves and a 2.63 GAA.

Scouting Stanford
The Cardinal have been a consistent national power, checking into the NFHCA Preseason Poll at No. 21 in the nation after being tabbed as the favorite to win the America East West Division Title in 2019. Stanford has received the honor four of the past five season and have won two of the last three America East Conference titles. The Cardinal have also qualified for 10 of the last 12 NCAA Tournaments despite coming up short in 2018 after going 14-6 and 5-1 in America East play. Stanford returns America East Offensive Player of the Year Corinne Zanolli, Co-Goalkeeper of the Year Kelsey Bing and Rookie of the Year Molly Redgrove.

Preseason All-BIG EAST
For the third time in the past four seasons, the Bobcats placed a player on the Preseason All-BIG EAST team as Inès Ruiz Martinez received the honor for the first time in her career. Elisa Ruiz Martinez (2018) and Angie King (2016) have also previously received BIG EAST preseason recognition.
BIG EAST Championships
Quinnipiac University is set to host the 2019 BIG EAST Tournament at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey Stadium on Nov. 8 and 10. The Bobcats are host the tournament for the first time in program history and just the third year of the stadium. Quinnipiac was picked to finish seventh in the BIG EAST this season.
New Coaches
Head coach Becca Main revamped her coaching staff in the offseason as Nina Klein was promoted to Associate Head Coach while Montana Fleming returned to the program as an assistant coach and Emma Way joined the team as a volunteer assistant coach. Klein joined the program in 2018 as an assistant while Fleming spent the last season as an assistant at Temple.
Statistical Champion
Inès Ruiz Martinez was crowned the NCAA Field Hockey Statistical Champion for Defensive Saves in the 2018 season after recording nine and leading the nation with 0.6 defensive saves per game. Ruiz Martinez recorded a career-high three in one of the Bobcats final games of the season at Temple, her first-ever three defensive save games.
Returning Offense
The Bobcats return a majority of the offensive production from the 2018 season with 75 percent of the goals coming back, led by Whipkey's six tallies. In addition to returning 75 percent of the goal-scoring, the Bobcats also return 73.3 percent of the point production, with 66 points coming back for 2019.
New Faces
Quinnipiac brought in nine newcomers to the program in the offseason to bring the Bobcats underclassman to 17. The Bobcats freshman class consists of two goalkeepers, three midfielders, three forwards and one defender. Highlighting the class are standout goalkeepers Mack Vorel and Hedda Biermann-Ratjen, forwards Eva Veldhorst and Julianna Cappello and midfielder Olivia Howard.
She's Still Got It
Associate head coach Nina Klein continued her strong performance with USA Field Hockey as she earned a spot at the USA Field Hockey Women's National Development Team Selection Camp in December after a good showing at the Young Women's National Championship. Klein is one of 32 players to receive an invite.
Helping Others
Quinnipiac field hockey was honored as a top 10 team in community service as tracked by Helper Helper, an official NCAA volunteer management platform. The team ranked ninth among all field hockey programs with 266 service hours and 71 percent participation.
