HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team is back in MAAC play this weekend as the Bobcats host the Canisius Golden Griffins in a matchup of the league's top two teams beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12 p.m. followed by a single game on Sunday at 12 p.m.
Scouting Canisius
The Golden Griffins had won six straight games before coming up just short in the second game of Monday's doubleheader against Manhattan, winning the first game 3-2 before falling 5-4. Canisius is tied with Quinnipiac and Monmouth for the second most overall wins in the league. William Kruil leads the team with a .298 batting average in 24 games this season, recording 28 hits with seven doubles, 19 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Stephen Bennett leads the team with 29 hits on the season and 11 extra-base hits, including four triples and three home runs, while Jacob Victor passes the team with 22 RBIs. Nolan Hunt has statistically been among the top pitchers for the Golden Griffins as he is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA and has 25 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched. Andrew Kneussle has a 5.52 ERA and Andrew Sipowicz has a 6.82 ERA.
All-Time vs. Canisius
Quinnipiac comes into the weekend series with a 6-10 record all-time against Canisius, but the two have become more even in the past three seasons as the Bobcats are 5-5 in the last 10 meetings between the two teams. Last season, the Bobcats took the three-game series with a pair of wins in Western New York, but the Golden Griffins took down Quinnipiac in the MAAC Championships with an 11-3 win.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats traveled up I-91 to New Britain, Connecticut, on Wednesday afternoon where they came up just short against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, 10-9. Kevin Huscher and Liam Scafariello each homered in the game but the Blue Devils scored twice in the eighth inning to take the game.
Extending the Streak
Andre Marrero doubled in his only at bat on Wednesday as he extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games. Marrero has been the Bobcats most consistent offensive weapon this season as he leads the team with a .333 batting average, .419 on base percentage, .578 slugging percentage, 30 hits, 19 runs scored, five home runs, 21 RBIs and 10 stolen bases.
Terrific Tyler
Tyler Poulin heads into the weekend having not allowed a run in 15 consecutive innings, covering his last two starts. Poulin struck out five batters in eight scoreless inning as he improved to 4-1 with the Bobcats 7-1 win at Niagara last weekend. Poulin now has 43 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched this season.
Husch Up
Kevin Huscher had one of his best games of the season as he hit his first home run of the 2019 and had a three-hit game in the loss at CCSU. Huscher recorded multiple hits in a game for the sixth time this season and scored three runs in a game for the second time.
Striking Out the Competition
Chris Enns is also coming off one of his best starts of the 2019 season as he picked up his second win at Niagara on March 29. Enns struck out nine batters, the second-most he's recorded both in a game this season and in his career, in six innings of work. He struck out multiple batters in three of the six innings, and is already nearing a career-high in strikeouts with 32, almost matching his 37 from 2017.
Cruz Control
Anthony Cruz came off the bench on Wednesday and had one of his best games of his career as he went 3 for 3 with three doubles, a walk, two runs scored and one RBI. He recorded three hits in a game for the second time this season and has multiple hits in six games. Cruz currently has a career-best .345 batting average with a .400 on base percentage and .491 slugging percentage.
Consistent Correira
Arthur Correira has been solid at the backend of the Bobcats pitching rotation in his first season as a starting pitcher, recording a 2.67 ERA and an opponent batting average of .206. Correira has 24 strikeouts in 27 innings pitched, while he has not allowed more than three earned runs in a start this season.
Moving Up the Record Book
Liam Scafariello's bat has come alive once again as the Bobcats outfielder belted his fourth home run of the season in the loss at CCSU on Wednesday. He is second on the team with four home runs and 14 RBIs. In his career, Scafariello has 35 home runs which pulls him within four of tying Joe Zangari '00 for the most home runs in Quinnipiac baseball history. Scafariello passed Vin Siena '86 for third in program history with his home run at CCSU.
Three Times the Fun
Gianni Arici shined in his first career start for the Bobcats on Wednesday as he was a perfect 3 for 3 with a trio of singles. Arici's three-hit game was the first of his career and he now has five hits this season.
