Bobcats Score Three Runs in Final Two Innings but Can't Complete Comeback in 8-6 Loss

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Evan Vulgamore (Bow, New Hampshire) hit a two-run home run with an 0-2 count and two outs in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday afternoon but the Quinnipiac baseball team came up just short at Bryant, 8-6, in a matchup against the top-ranked team in New England.

Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) got the comeback attempt start in the top of the eighth inning with the Bobcats trailing 8-3 as he drove in Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) all the way from first base with an RBI double. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth from Colin Donnelly (Flemington, New Jersey), Vulgamore was able to homer as Andre Marrero (West Springfield, New Jersey) had reached on a one-out walk.

After a pitching change, Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) drew a walk but was stranded on first to end the game.

Kyle Maves (Burlington, Ontario) led the charge with three hits, a stolen base and two runs scored as the Bobcats scored three runs in the first two innings of the game to take a 3-1 lead but could not hang on as the Bulldogs scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Marrero had a pair of singles, two RBIs and a run scored while Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) singled twice, walked and stole a base and Lutz singled twice and scored a run.

FIRST INNING

Maves led off the game with a single in the top of the first inning and advanced to second on a passed ball
Marrero followed with a single through the right side of the infield to bring home Maves

SECOND INNING

Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) led off the inning with a hit by pitch and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt
Maves singled through the left side to move Moskey up to third base before Moskey scored on an RBI groundout from Marrero
After an Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) walk, Maves stole third and scored on a wild pitch

EIGHTH INNING

Dylan Lutz (Denver, Colorado) reached on an infield single with two outs in the top of the eighth and came around to score from first on a double to left field from Moskey.

NINTH INNING

Marrero drew a one-out walk to put a runner on base
With two outs in the inning and an 0-2 count, Vulgamore blasted a two-run home run to left field to pull the Bobcats within two runs.

NOTES

Quinnipiac now has 87 stolen bases on the season, passing the 1982 team's record for stolen bases in a season with 83.
Moskey's eighth-inning RBI double was the 42^nd double in his career to move him into seventh in program history.
Next on the list is head coach John Delaney in sixth with 43 doubles during his playing career with the Bobcats.
Moskey also has 192 hits in his career as he looks to become the 10^th player in program history with 200 career hits.
Vulgamore homered for a second consecutive game with a two-run blast in the ninth inning Tuesday, his sixth home run of the season and career-high 22^nd extra-base hit
He now has 39 RBIs this season to lead the Bobcats, just one shy of last year's 40 and has a hit in five straight games
Maves recorded his fourth career three-hit game with a trio of singles at Bryant on Tuesday
He scored a pair of runs to give him 28 runs scored on the season, good for second on the team, while he stole his MAAC-leading 17^th base
Ostberg also added two hits to extend his hitting streak to six games and has five multi-hit games in that span, as well as drawing a walk and stealing his 15^th base of the season
He has recorded a hit in 13 of the last 14 games to raise his batting average to .335 on the season
Marrero has hits in four straight games after his second consecutive two-hit performance
Marrero is the second Bobcat to reach the 50-hit mark with 51, while he leads the team with 35 runs scored and is second with 32 RBIs
