HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team is back in Hamden for a pair of midweek games this week as the Bobcats host Yale in another installment of the Battle of Whitney Ave. on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before hosting Bryant on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
Scouting Yale
Yale comes into Tuesday's game with an 11-20 overall record and 5-7 mark in Ivy League play. The Bulldogs have lost four straight after being swept by Columbia this past weekend and are just 5-10 since being the Bobcats back on March 20. Griffin Dey continues to be one of the Bulldogs best offensive weapons as he owns a slash-line of .336/.457/.597 and has seven home runs to lead the team. Dey also leads the Bulldogs with 14 extra-base hits, 32 RBIs and 27 walks. Simon Whiteman leads Yale with 46 hits, 30 runs scored, 11 doubles and 25 stolen baes as well as compiling a .329 batting average. Yale's pitching staff has combined for a 6.24 ERA in 31 games but has 242 strikeouts in 271 innings pitched.
All-Time vs. Yale
The Bobcats and Bulldogs meet for a second time this season after Yale took the first meeting on March 20 at Yale Field, 11-2. Quinnipiac is 5-8 all-time against Yale and are in search of the first win against the Bulldogs since the March 25, 2015. The Bobcats are looking for their first home win vs. Yale since April 6, 2006.
Scouting Bryant
The Bulldogs are one of the top teams in New England, coming into the week ranked No. 2 in the region behind the UConn Huskies. Bryant is 24-11 on the season with a 7-2 record in league play, and have won four straight games after a commanding sweep of Hartford this past weekend. The Bulldogs outscored the Hawks 38-15 in the sweep. Outfielder Ryan Ward was named a national player of the week and has followed up his freshman year with another impressive campaign. Ward leads all qualifiers on the team with a .371 batting average, 53 hits and 12 doubles. James Ciliento has scored a team-high 46 runs while his 35 RBIs are second on the team to go with six home runs. Jimmy Titus has eight home runs, 44 RBIs and 31 runs scored along with a .366 batting average and .611 slugging percentage. Bryant is batting .311 as a team while the pitching staff has been equally impressive with a 3.90 ERA and 309 strikeouts in 314 innings.
All-Time vs. Bryant
Quinnipiac comes into Wednesday's matchup with a 1-18 record against Bryant in 19 all-time meetings. The Bulldogs have won 12 straight games, including Bryant's 5-2 victory over Quinnipiac earlier this season in Richmond, Virginia, at the Spider Invitational. The Bobcats lone victory over Bryant came in the second game of a doubleheader at Bryant on May 8, 2011, when both teams were part of the Northeast Conference.
Weekend Bender
Colton Bender belted his first home run of the season and second of his career Sunday afternoon in the Bobcats dominating 12-0 win over La Salle. As part of his two-hit day, Bender set a career-high with his 30th hit of the season. He is also coming off his first career four RBI game to give him a career-high 15 this season.
On a Roll
Evan Vulgamore extended his hitting streak to six games and also extended his RBI streak to six games with two hits and one RBI at La Salle on Sunday. He finished the series with five hits and five RBIs. Over the past six games, Vulgamore has four multi-hit efforts and is 10 for 26 with six runs scored and eight RBIs. He has tied his career-high with 11 doubles and eight walks, and is one stolen base shy of tying his high of nine from last season. Vulgamore leads the team with a .321 batting average.
Free Kohn Day
Michael Kohn made his first start since April 3 and got back into the swing of things as he went 2 for 3 with a double, two walks, three runs scored and one RBI. Kohn reached base four times on Sunday and scored three times, both single game highs for the Bobcats' freshman first baseman. Three of Kohn's six hits have gone for doubles this season.
Workhorse
Andrew Workman continues to be one of the Bobcats best options out of the bullpen as he extended his streak of innings pitched without allowing an earned run to 20.2 innings over his last 11 appearances dating back to March 13 at Florida Atlantic. Over the past week, Workman pitched 3.2 innings and recorded two strikeouts while allowing just three baserunners and an unearned run at Boston College. Workman is fourth in the MAAC with a 1.42 ERA and is fifth with three saves.
Don Donnelly
Despite a rough outing at La Salle in game one on Saturday, Colin Donnelly has also been a solid weapon for the Bobcats out of the bullpen. He did not allow a single baserunner in 1.2 innings in Sunday's appearance, striking out four of the five batters he faced. Donnelly has three or more strikeouts in each of his last four appearances. On the season, Donnelly has not allowed a run in six of his 12 appearances.
Ostberg's Awesome
Ian Ostberg has hit safely in four straight games for the Bobcats as he finished the weekend with five hits in 10 at-bats, hitting two doubles, scoring two runs with an RBI and stealing a base. Ostberg has raised his batting average back up to .300 and his nearing career-highs in several offensive categories with his 16 RBIs, 36 hits and 13 runs scored.
Scafariello Chasing History
Liam Scafariello has started to turn his season around as he recorded hits in four of the last five games, scored runs in five straight games and has a walk in three straight. Scafariello hit a home run at Hartford last Tuesday, the 36th of his Quinnipiac career as he pulls within three of tying Joe Zangari '00 with 39 home runs for the most in program history.
