HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey hits the road once again as the Bobcats are on the road to take on the No. 20 Union Dutchmen before traveling back east to Troy to face Rensselaer Saturday night.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac split its weekend series last weekend as the Bobcats blanked Yale, 4-0, before falling to Brown in the second game of the weekend, 4-1. The Bobcats retained the 17th Heroes Hat with the win over the Bulldogs, their fourth win in the past two seasons over the in-state rival.
Scouting Union
Union has split each of its past four ECAC Hockey series and come into the weekend with a 14-9-5 overall record. The Dutchmen sit in eighth in the ECAC Hockey standings with 15 points and a 7-8-1 record. Last weekend, Union opened the weekend with a 5-3 loss at Harvard before defeating Dartmouth on the road. Cole Maier continues to lead the team with 17 assists and 23 points while fellow senior Ryan Walker has the team lead with 10 goals. Walker and Brett Supinski each have 20 points on the season. Special teams have struggled for the Dutchmen this season with the power play at 18.8 percent and penalty kill at just 74.4 percent. Darion Hanson and Jake Kupsky continue to share time in net with Hanson leading the way statistically at 8-5-4 with a 2.37 GAA and .922 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Union
The Bobcats hold a one game advantage over the Dutchmen in 39 all-time meetings at 18-17-4. Friday night marks the 40th game between Quinnipiac and Union. The Dutchmen have won five straight games against the Bobcats and Quinnipiac is 0-6-1 in the last seven games dating back to the start of the 2015-16 season.
Scouting Rensselaer
Rensselaer has struggled at times this season but are riding a four-game unbeaten streak heading into the weekend with a win and three ties. After a scoreless tie in non-conference play against Union, the Engineers picked up three points in league play with a win over Colgate and tie with Cornell before tying Dartmouth on the road last Friday. The Engineers come into the weekend with an 8-17-3 record and 5-9-2 mark in ECAC Hockey play. Jacob Hayhurst has dished out the puck well with a team-high 20 assists and 23 points. Patrick Polino leads the team with seven goals on the season and is one of four players with five goals. Freshman Owen Savory has taken hold of the starting goaltender job, recording a 2.30 GAA and .933 save percentage despite a 3-9-3 record.
All-Time vs. Rensselaer
The Bobcats are 16-7-9 all-time with the Engineers in 32 games between the two teams dating back to their first meeting in 1999. Quinnipiac came out on top in the first meeting this season, 3-0, in Hamden behind Daniel Winslow's first career goal as well as tallies from Odeen Tufto and Chase Priskie.
National Polls
The Bobcats continue to remain a mainstay in the top 10 of the national polls, coming in this weekend ranks No. 5 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll and No. 6 in the USCHO.com Division I Men's Poll. Quinnipiac has been nationally ranked since cracking the rankings on Oct. 22, a span of 14 USCHO Polls and 16 USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls.
Bracketology
Quinnipiac comes into the weekend at No. 5 in the PairWise Rankings, an indicator in where teams will land for the NCAA Tournament. In the latest Bracketology reports from USCHO.com, the Bobcats are slated to be a No. 2 Seed in the East Regional, located in Providence. As of this week, Quinnipiac would face the East Regional No. 3 Seed Western Michigan while the No. 1 seed Minnesota Duluth would face the No. 14 seed Northeastern.
Senior CLASS Award
Prior to last weekend's slate of games, senior captain Chase Priskie was named as a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, presented annually to the senior student-athlete who excels both on and off the ice. He is Quinnipiac's first Senior CLASS Award Top 10 Finalist since Jean-Marc Beaudoin '10 during the 2009-10 season. Fan voting runs through April 8 and fans can vote by visiting SeniorClassAward.com.
Riga's Reign
Associate head coach Bill Riga is in the midst of his 11th season with the Bobcats and made some Quinnipiac history of his own last weekend. A major part of Rand Pecknold's staff, he is passed former assistant coach Ben Syer, the current associate head coach at Cornell, for the most wins by an assistant in program history with 243. Syer recorded 242 wins in his career while he was an assistant coach on Pecknold's staff for 12 seasons, including the first three years Riga joined the Quinnipiac coaching staff.
High Scoring Pace
Odeen Tufto continues to rack up points for the Bobcats in his sophomore season, coming into the weekend with 37 points on the season with 13 goals and 24 assists. Tufto ranks fifth in the nation over the past two seasons with 78 total points. He is in pretty exclusive company, trailing Michigan State's Taro Hirose (89), Princeton's Ryan Kuffner (84) and Max Veronneau (83), and Canisius' Dylan McLaughlin (81).
Back at It
After Tufto was held without a point in three straight games from Jan. 12-22, he has returned to his scoring ways with a four-game point streak dating back to the Clarkson/St. Lawrence weekend on Feb. 1-2. Tufto's four-game point streak is his fourth point streak of the season of at least four points. He is tied for third in the nation with 37 points, tied fourth with 24 assists and is tied for fourth in ECAC Hockey with 13 goals. He leads the league in assists and points.
