HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team will celebrate their senior class this weekend as they play host to Saint Peter's on Saturday afternoon and Rider on Sunday afternoon. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m.
Seniors Alejandra Rodriguez, Lauren Miller, Maria Pansari and Kaleigh Oates will be honored on Sunday.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats traveled to New York as they took on Manhattan and Iona. The Bobcats played ten sets over the two days, winning both matches 3-2. The weekend sweep was the first for the Bobcats in MAAC play this season. First-year Outside Hitter Aryanah Diaz recorded her MAAC-leading third triple-double of the season against Manhattan on Saturday. Four Bobcats recorded double-digit kills on Saturday, with Sophomore Outside Hitter Olga Zampati leading the way with 16. On Sunday, the Bobcats had three players with double-digit kills with Sophomore Right Side Hitter Georgia Tselepi recording 18 kills.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS
Saint Peter's currently sits last in the MAAC with a 1-14 conference record. They have lost 14 conference matches in a row after defeating Manhattan on the opening day of conference play. Sophomore Outside Hitter Alanis Alvarado leads the Peacocks in kills with 331, and is third in the MAAC in kills per set with 3.28. As a team, the Peacocks have a hitting percentage of .126, while their opponents are hitting .234.
LAST MATCHUP VS. SAINT PETER'S
The Bobcats defeated the Peacocks in straight sets in the team's first meeting this season. The two teams played a hard fought two sets, before the Bobcats won the third set convincingly, 25-12. Aryanah Diaz recorded a triple-double in the match, tallying 17 assists, 13 digs and 12 kills. As a team, the Bobcats hit .298.
SCOUTING THE BRONCS
Rider is in second place in the MAAC with a 10-4 record, and they are riding a six match winning streak. Freshman Outside Hitter Morgan Romano has been named MAAC Rookie of the Week ten times this season. She has either shared or won the award outright every week this season. Romano has tallied 447 kills on the season and 4.66 kills per set, which is the best in the MAAC. As a team, Rider is the fifth best team in terms of hitting percentage with .185, and they are the third best team in opponent hitting percentage with .192.
LAST MATCHUP VS. RIDER
The Bobcats fell to the Broncs in three sets in their previous matchup this season. Rider played strong defense at the net, tallying 12 blocks compared to the Bobcats one. Morgan Romano tallied 18 kills to lead the way for the Broncs, while Maggie Baker led the Bobcats offense with eight kills.
BAKER'S BALLING OUT
Sophomore Outside Hitter Maggie Baker led the Bobcats offensively against Iona and Manhattan. Baker began the weekend on Saturday by posting 15 kills against Iona. She came back on Saturday and posted a career-high 25 kills against Manhattan on Sunday. She posted her third straight game of double-digit kills with 19 against Marist.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIAZ
First-year Outside Hitter Aryanah Diaz recorded her first career triple-double against New Hampshire. Diaz finished with 20 digs, 16 assists and 14 kills. Her triple-double was the first Quinnipiac volleyball triple-double recorded since 2007. Diaz recorded her second career triple-double on Sunday, October 13 against Saint Peter's. She recorded her third triple-double at Manhattan on Saturday, November 2. Diaz has three of the four triple doubles recorded by MAAC players this season.
OUTSTANDING OATES
Senior Middle Blocker Kaleigh Oates was named MAAC Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday, September 10. She received this honor for her play at the Knights Fall Classic. Oates currently leads all MAAC attackers with a .395 hitting percentage.
PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac was picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday, August 20. The Bobcats also received a first place vote for the second time in three seasons.
VETERAN LEADERSHIP
Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.), Lauren Miller (Collegeville, Pa.), Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Kaleigh Oates (Downingtown, Pa.) return as seniors for the Bobcats. All four seniors saw significant playing time last season with all of them playing more than 80 sets over the course of the season. Rodriguez and Pansari played all 112 sets last season.
NEW FACES
The Bobcats welcome four new players to the team for the 2019 season. First-year players Alisa Mejia (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Aryanah Diaz (Miami, Fla.) come in as college rookies. Georgia Tselepi (Athens, Greece) and Olga Zampati (Athens, Greece) come in as transfers from other Division I colleges. Tselepi comes to Quinnipiac after transferring from Cincinnati and Zampati comes from Oklahoma.
ROBINSON ERA IS HERE
Head Coach Kyle Robinson picked up his first win as a Bobcat in a 3-0 win against Seton Hall at the Morgan State Invitational.
