Women's Soccer Set to Take on No. 2 Fairfield in MAAC Semifinals

Bobcats, Stags to kickoff at 7 PM on ESPN+
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's soccer team will face in-state rival No. 2 Fairfield in the MAAC Women's Soccer Championship semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN+, and the winner will advance to the 2019 MAAC Championship game on Sunday, Nov. 10. Quinnipiac is coming off a 3-2 comeback win against No. 4 Marist in the first round.

GAME NOTES
Last Time Out:
Quinnipiac defeated the No. 4 Marist Red Foxes in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Sunday, Nov. 3 in comeback fashion. The Bobcats trailed 2-0 through 65 minutes of play before sophomore Selena Salas found the back of the net to cut the Red Foxes' lead to one. Salas scored the equalizer in the 70th minute off a set-piece taken right above the penalty box. Sophomore Gretchen Kron scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to give the Bobcats the 3-2 win. This is the only game where Quinnipiac has come back to win after being down 2-0 in any round of the MAAC Championship since becoming a member of the conference in 2013.
A Look at the MAAC Playoffs:
No. 1 Monmouth will host No. 6 Niagara on Thursdsay, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. The Hawks are looking to win their 11th-straight game, and the Purple Eagles are looking to continue the upsets after defeating No. 3 Rider in the first round. The winners of the semifinals will go on to play in the championship game, which will be hosted by the higher seed on Sunday, Nov. 10.
Bobcats Playoff Breakdown:
The Bobcats have advanced to postseason four seasons in a row. Since joining the MAAC in 2013, the Bobcats are 4-4-0 overall in postseason play. The Bobcats advanced to the championship game in 2016 and lost to Monmouth. Quinnipiac's 3-2 win against Marist in the 2019 first round was the best comeback for the Bobcats in playoff games since joining the conference.
All-MAAC Awards:
Three first-years receive MAAC awards for their rookie debuts as Bobcats. First-year keeper Meaghan Phillips was named the Co-Rookie of the Year Award and was selected to the All-Rookie Team. Midfielder Olivia Scott and right back Kayla Mingachos were also named to the All-Rookie Team.
Scouting Fairfield:
The Stags finished conference play with a 7-2-1 record, earning a two seed in the playoff picture. Fairfield's two conference losses were claimed by Quinnipiac and Monmouth. The Bobcats played at Fairfield back on Oct. 9 and shutout the Stags, 3-0. Sophomore Emily Loney and first-years Olivia Scott and Markela Bejleri each scored in the win. The Stags went on to four of the next five games before losing to Monmouth, 2-0, on Oct. 30.
Bobcats Battling:
In each of the last three games, the Bobcats have been trailing before coming back to win or tie. Against Manhattan, Salas scored the equalizer to send the game into overtime and eventually end in a tie. At home against Siena, the Bobcats trailed, 1-0, before Salas and Grusntein scored in the first half to give Quinnipiac the 2-1 win. On the road against Marist, Quinnipiac let in two goals before coming back to score three unanswered second-half goals to win the game.
Underclassmen Leading:
Sophomore Selena Salas leads the team with 16 points on six goals and four assists, which is tied for seventh in the conference. Salas has scored at least one goal in the last three games for Quinnipiac, and she averages 1.07 points per game, which is ranked third in the MAAC. When Salas scores or tallies an assist the Bobcats are 5-0-1 overall. First-year Olivia Scott is second on the team in scoring with three goals and four assists for 10 points. Kron leads the team with three game-winning goals.
Grunstein Finding Her Groove:
Senior Ally Grunstein leads the team and the conference with eight assists. She has tallied one goal and two assists in the last two games. The Bobcats are 6-0-0 when Grunstein scores or records an assist.
Phillips in the Net:
Freshman Meaghan Phillips has tallied five shutouts on the season. She is currently tied with Gwen Miller '93 in the 10th spot for the program's single-season shutout record. Kate Mockaitis '94 and Chloe Beizer '07 hold the program's record with seven shutouts in one season. Phillips has totaled a 0.96 goals against average and 0.797 save percentage, which ranks second and fifth in the conference, respectively.
