HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team hits the road for the second time in three ECAC Hockey weekends where the Bobcats face the No. 2/2 Cornell Big Red and the Colgate Raiders.
Last Time Out
Quinnipiac kicked off its first home ECAC Hockey weekend in style as the Bobcats swept the Union Dutchmen and Rensselaer Engineers for their first two league wins of the season. The Bobcats came back from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat Union before scoring three unanswered goals to take down Rensselaer, 3-1, Saturday night to complete the sweep.
Scouting Cornell
The Big Red come into the weekend as one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the country, joined by fellow ECAC Hockey rival Harvard. Cornell is led by junior Morgan Barron with six goals and 12 points on the season while his six helpers are second on the team. First year defenseman Sam Malinski leads the team with seven assists and nine points while three Big Red skaters have two goals and five assists for seven points. The Big Red are averaging just under five goals per game while Matthew Galajda remains one of the top goaltenders in the nation, posting a 1.67 GAA and .926 save percentage in six starts. The power play for Cornell has also been dominant at 42.3 percent while the penalty kill has struggled at 70 percent.
All-Time vs. Cornell
The Bobcats trail the all-time series between the two teams, 17-22-4, despite going 1-0-1 against the Big Red last season. Quinnipiac won the matchup between the two teams, 4-2, at Lynah Rink before skating to a tie at home. The Bobcats have won six of the last seven regular season meetings between the two teams at Lynah Rink and are 6-3 in the last nine overall.
Scouting Colgate
The Raiders are much improved this season with a 3-6-3 record heading into the weekend and 2-2-0 mark against ECAC Hockey competition. Colgate is 2-2-1 in its last five games with a tie at Providence and wins vs. Brown and at St. Lawrence. Colton Young and Paul McAvoy are tied for the team lead with four goals and six points while Ben Sharf has six points on two goals and four assists. Sophomore goaltender Mitch Benson spots a 2.37 GAA this season to go with a .913 save percentage as he's made 295 saves in 12 games this season. He also has one shutout. The Raiders are just 1 for 44 on the power play this season while the penalty kill has been steady at 82.2 percent.
All-Time vs. Colgate
Quinnipiac is 23-16-2 all-time in 41 games against Colgate dating back to the 2005-06 season. The Bobcats took two of the three matchups between the two teams last season, with a 5-0 win in Hamilton and 6-0 win on Long Island before falling in overtime in Hamden, 5-4. Quinnipiac is 9-2-0 in the last 11 meetings dating back to the 2014-15 season.
ECAC Hockey Weekly Awards
Keith Petruzzelli earned his first career ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Week Award after a weekend sweep of Union and Rensselaer. He earned the first league weekly award of the season after Quinnipiac earned 11 weekly awards in 2018-19.
Future Bobcats
Quinnipiac men's ice hockey signed four recruits to NLI's over the past week, with two of the forwards hailing from Canada and two from the United States. The Bobcats latest signee, Ty Smilanic, is a projected first or second round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and currently plays for the United States National Development Program U-18 Team. Forward Austin Spiridakis will join the program from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL while the Bobcats also signed a pair of players from prep school in Jacob Quillan of the Salisbury School and Victor Czerneckianair from Mount St. Charles Academy.
Rand's Winning Ways
Head coach Rand Pecknold continues to approach milestone wins in his career. In addition to having 517 wins to rank 12th all-time among Division I Men's Hockey coaches, he is just 10 wins from passing former men's and women's tennis head coach Mike Quitko for the most wins by a coach in Quinnipiac Athletics history. Pecknold and Quitko are the only two Quinnipiac coaches to record 500 wins with Quinnipiac programs.
Kasual Karlis
Karlis Cukste had one of the best weekends of his career this past weekend as he tallied a goal and three assists along with six blocked shots. Cukste scored his first goal of the season on the power play Friday night against Union before posting his first career three-assist and three-point game against Rensselaer. Cukste is tied for third among ECAC Hockey defensemen with seven points while his 17 blocks are tied for eighth.
Odeen, Odeen, Odeen, Odeen
Odeen Tufto extended his point streak to a career best eight games with a goal and an assist this past weekend. Tufto tallied his first goal of the year on Saturday night and now has points in 10 of the 11 games this season. He is tied for the ECAC Hockey lead with 12 assists while his 13 points are fourth in the league.
Century Mark on the Horizon
Tufto is also on the quest to record his 100th career point as he comes into the weekend with 96 points in 87 games played, averaging over a point per game in his career. Tufto would become the 41st player in program history to record 100 points after Chase Priskie reached the mark last season. Tufto also comes into the weekend with 71 career assists, ranked 23rd in program history.
