HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team takes on two more MAAC opponents this weekend as they head to Manhattan on Saturday and Iona on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats welcomed their in-state rival Fairfield to Hamden on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats fell to the Stags 3-0. Olga Zampati, Georgia Tselepi, and Kaleigh Oates all recorded five kills to lead the Bobcats offensively.
SCOUTING THE JASPERS
Manhattan has lost two straight matches after losing to both Canisius and Niagara in their Western New York trip. The Jaspers sit tied for eighth place in the MAAC with a conference record of 3-9. The Jaspers have two players that have tallied at least 200 kills on the season. Sophomore Outside Hitter Julia Menocal leads the team with 205 kills, and Junior Middle Blocker Erin Hoener is right behind her with 200 kills.
LAST MATCHUP VS. MANHATTAN
The Bobcats dropped a tight 3-2 match to the Jaspers as part of Quinnipiac's home-opening weekend. Aryanah Diaz dished out 47 assists in the match. Maggie Baker and Morgan Sherwin each posted 20+ kills each with Baker recording 25 and Sherwin adding 23.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
The Gaels have lost two straight matches as they also dropped both matches on their Western New York trip to Niagara and Canisius. Iona is tied with Manhattan for eighth in the conference with a record of 3-9. Junior Right Side Hitter leads Iona offensively with 207 kills. Senior Middle Blocker Karla Johnson leads the defense at the net for the Gaels with 71 blocks.
LAST MATCHUP VS. GAELS
In the Bobcats' home-opener, they defeated the Gaels 3-1. Maggie Baker recorded 15 kills and Aryanah Diaz dished out 22 assists. Morgan Sherwin added nine kills and two aces for the Bobcats.
BAKER'S BALLING OUT
Sophomore Outside Hitter Maggie Baker led the Bobcats offensively against Iona and Manhattan. Baker began the weekend on Saturday by posting 15 kills against Iona. She came back on Saturday and posted a career-high 25 kills against Manhattan on Sunday. She posted her third straight game of double-digit kills with 19 against Marist.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIAZ
Aryanah Diaz, a First-year Outside Hitter recorded her first career triple-double against New Hampshire. Diaz finished with 20 digs, 16 assists and 14 kills. Her triple-double was the first Quinnipiac volleyball triple-double recorded since 2007. Diaz recorded her second career triple-double on Sunday, October 13 against Saint Peter's. Diaz has two of the three triple doubles recorded by MAAC players this season.
OUTSTANDING OATES
Senior Middle Blocker Kaleigh Oates was named MAAC Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday, September 10. She received this honor for her play at the Knights Fall Classic. Oates currently leads all MAAC attackers with a .401 hitting percentage.
PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac was picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday, August 20. The Bobcats also received a first place vote for the second time in three seasons.
VETERAN LEADERSHIP
Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.), Lauren Miller (Collegeville, Pa.), Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Kaleigh Oates (Downingtown, Pa.) return as seniors for the Bobcats. All four seniors saw significant playing time last season with all of them playing more than 80 sets over the course of the season. Rodriguez and Pansari played all 112 sets last season.
NEW FACES
The Bobcats welcome four new players to the team for the 2019 season. First-year's Alisa Mejia (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Aryanah Diaz (Miami, Fla.) come in as college rookies. Georgia Tselepi (Athens, Greece) and Olga Zampati (Athens, Greece) come in as transfers from other Division 1 colleges. Tselepi comes to Quinnipiac after transferring from Cincinnati and Zampati comes from Oklahoma.
ROBINSON ERA IS HERE
Head Coach Kyle Robinson picked up his first win as a Bobcat in a 3-0 win against Seton Hall at the Morgan State Invitational.
