HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team plays their first home matches of the season this weekend, as Iona and Manhattan travel to Hamden to take on the Bobcats. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Bobcats have won two of their last three home openers, and have won a match in their first home MAAC weekend in the previous three seasons.
LAST TIME OUT
The Bobcats traveled down I-95 to take on in-state rival Fairfield. The Bobcats fell in three sets despite holding leads for the majority of sets two and three. Aryanah Diaz led the Bobcats as she recorded her third straight double-double. Diaz tallied 19 digs and 10 kills to record the double-double.
SCOUTING THE GAELS
The defending MAAC Champion Iona Gaels are currently on a two game losing streak following their first win of the season against Saint Peter's two weekends ago. The Gaels, who were picked to finish third in the MAAC Preseason Poll currently sit at 1-3 in conference play. Junior Right Side Hitter Jamie Smith leads Iona with 142 kills on the season. Senior Middle Blocker Karla Johnson leads the Gaels with 44 blocks on the season, and she sits in third in the conference in hitting percentage with a .294.
SCOUTING THE JASPERS
Manhattan have lost six straight matches, and currently have an 0-4 record in the MAAC. The Jaspers were picked to finish ninth in the MAAC Preseason Poll, but currently stand in 10th in the conference. Junior Middle Blocker Erin Hoener leads the Jaspers in kills with 125. Freshman Outside Hitter Lizzi Brown leads the Jaspers in aces with 19, which is good for second in the MAAC.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIAZ
Freshman Outside Hitter Aryanah Diaz recorded her first career triple-double against New Hampshire. Diaz finished with 20 digs, 16 assists and 14 kills. Her triple-double was the first Quinnipiac volleyball triple-double recorded since 2007. Diaz also has recorded a double-double in three straight matches.
OUTSTANDING OATES
Senior Middle Blocker Kaleigh Oates was named MAAC Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday, September 10. She received this honor for her play at the Knights Fall Classic. Oates currently leads the MAAC in hitting percentage with .381.
PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac was picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday, August 20. The Bobcats also received a first place vote for the second time in three seasons.
VETERAN LEADERSHIP
Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.), Lauren Miller (Collegeville, Pa.), Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Kaleigh Oates (Downingtown, Pa.) return as seniors for the Bobcats. All four seniors saw significant playing time last season with all of them playing more than 80 sets over the course of the season. Rodriguez and Pansari played all 112 sets last season.
NEW FACES
The Bobcats welcome four new players to the team for the 2019 season. Freshmen Alisa Mejia (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Aryanah Diaz (Miami, Fla.) come in as college rookies. Georgia Tselepi (Athens, Greece) and Olga Zampati (Athens, Greece) come in as transfers from other Division 1 colleges. Tselepi comes to Quinnipiac after transferring from Cincinnati and Zampati comes from Oklahoma.
ROBINSON ERA IS HERE
Head Coach Kyle Robinson picked up his first win as a Bobcat in a 3-0 win against Seton Hall at the Morgan State Invitational.
