HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac volleyball team hits the road this weekend for a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference matchups. The Bobcats will take on Rider on Saturday afternoon, and then take on Saint Peter's on Sunday afternoon. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
On Wednesday night, the Bobcats welcomed the Marist Red Foxes to Hamden. Quinnipiac, who lost to Marist earlier in the season, revenged that loss with a 3-1 victory. Maggie Baker led the Bobcats offensively with 19 kills. Alejandra Rodriguez led the Bobcats defensively with 27 digs and Lydia Jones recorded six total blocks in the win.
SCOUTING THE BRONCS
Rider has a record of 3-3 in conference play, which puts them in fifth place in the MAAC. The Broncs started conference play off with three straight wins, but they have dropped their last three conference games. Freshman Morgan Romano has won all six MAAC Rookie of the Week Awards so far this season. Romano leads the MAAC in kills with 313, which is over 100 more than second place. She is averaging just under five kills per set.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS
Saint Peter's holds a record of 1-5 in conference play, which puts them in a tie for last place in the MAAC. The Peacocks won their first conference match, but have lost five straight since that opening day win. Sophomore Outside Hitter Alanis Alvarado leads the Peacocks offensively with 187 kills. That mark is good enough for fifth in the MAAC.
BAKER'S BALLING OUT
Sophomore Outside Hitter Maggie Baker led the Bobcats offensively against Iona and Manhattan. Baker began the weekend on Saturday by posting 15 kills against Iona. She came back on Saturday and posted a career-high 25 kills against Manhattan on Sunday. She posted her third straight game of double-digit kills with 19 against Marist on Wednesday.
TRIPLE-DOUBLE DIAZ
Freshman Outside Hitter Aryanah Diaz recorded her first career triple-double against New Hampshire. Diaz finished with 20 digs, 16 assists and 14 kills. Her triple-double was the first Quinnipiac volleyball triple-double recorded since 2007. Diaz also has recorded a double-double in six straight matches.
OUTSTANDING OATES
Senior Middle Blocker Kaleigh Oates was named MAAC Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Tuesday, September 10. She received this honor for her play at the Knights Fall Classic. Oates currently leads the MAAC in hitting percentage with .377.
PRESEASON POLL
Quinnipiac was picked to finish fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Poll as announced by the league office on Tuesday, August 20. The Bobcats also received a first place vote for the second time in three seasons.
VETERAN LEADERSHIP
Alejandra Rodriguez (Toa Alta, P.R.), Lauren Miller (Collegeville, Pa.), Maria Pansari (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Kaleigh Oates (Downingtown, Pa.) return as seniors for the Bobcats. All four seniors saw significant playing time last season with all of them playing more than 80 sets over the course of the season. Rodriguez and Pansari played all 112 sets last season.
NEW FACES
The Bobcats welcome four new players to the team for the 2019 season. Freshmen Alisa Mejia (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Aryanah Diaz (Miami, Fla.) come in as college rookies. Georgia Tselepi (Athens, Greece) and Olga Zampati (Athens, Greece) come in as transfers from other Division 1 colleges. Tselepi comes to Quinnipiac after transferring from Cincinnati and Zampati comes from Oklahoma.
