HAMDEN, Conn. — In a classic slugfest, the Yale Bulldogs defeated the Quinnipiac Bobcats 16-9 on Tuesday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field.
While the spring weather was warm, in the low 70s, the bats were hot. Besides the 25 total runs, the teams combined for 27 hits (17 by Yale) surrendered by 14 pitchers — yes, count 'em, 14!
Quinnipiac was a generous host, committing five errors that led to four unearned runs. Yale's defense was error-free, so all nine of QU's runs were earned.
Yale utilized 10 of the contest's 14 pitchers: one for two innings, seven for one inning apiece, and two who recorded no outs. But those two yielded six of Quinnipiac's nine runs, tying an unenvied pitching record held by many — a single-game ERA of infinity.
Speaking of the Bobcats' runs ... naturally, postgame hitting stars and stats are plentiful. Bobcats sophomore Evan Vulgamore went 2-for 2 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Andre Marrero was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Junior Brian Moskey went 3-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Colton Bender was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Vulgamore (8 HRs) is tied for the third-most homers in the MAAC. Quinnipiac senior Ben Gibson (11) leads the MAAC and junior Liam Scafariello (9) is second.
Junior left-hander Sam Boies (1-1) got the win for Yale, while freshman right-hander Joe Preciado (1-2) took the loss.
Yale led 3-0 after one inning, 7-0 after two, and 8-0 halfway through three before the Bobcats scored four runs in the bottom of the third to give themselves a puncher's chance at 8-4. But Yale, which is in first place in the Ivy League, scored two runs apiece in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to go up 14-4.
Quinnipiac posted two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but Yale got two back in the top of the ninth. By the time QU recorded three runs in the bottom of the ninth to forge the 16-9 final, it was a proverbial case of "too little, too late" — and finally the scoreboard operator could catch a breath.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats will host Central Connecticut for a nonconference contest on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the QU Baseball Field, and then will host Niagara for a three-game weekend MAAC series on Saturday (doubleheader, 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
QU NOTES
• Quinnipiac (11-4 MAAC) is in first place in the 11-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference — and has been since day one of the conference season. Canisius (12-6) is in second place and Marist (10-5) is third.
• This past weekend, the Bobcats dropped two of three games to Iona in a MAAC series, their first series loss in conference this season. Heading into the weekend, QU had won four straight MAAC series to start the conference season.
• Now that the Yale game is history, Quinnipiac has played five games of a nine-game home stand, which started with a 6-5 nonconference win against Hartford last Tuesday. The home stand would have been 10 straight, but the nonconference home game scheduled against UMass last Wednesday was rained out.
