HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac Bobcats lost 9-6 to the Central Connecticut Blue Devils in a nonconference game Wednesday at the QU Baseball Field.
The loss is the fourth straight for the Bobcats after they had reached .500 on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Iona in the first game of a doubleheader.
The warm afternoon in Hamden felt more like summertime than spring, with temperatures near 90, and the temps seemed to help the ball to carry. A crowd of nearly 200 witnessed four home runs (three by Central) and several almost-homers that became warning-track outs.
Senior Ben Gibson hit Quinnipiac's home run — his 12 homers lead the MAAC. Two of his teammates are second and third in the conference: Liam Scafariello (9) and sophomore Evan Vulgamore (8).
Central leadoff hitter Dean Lockery got his team on the board right away via a solo home run. In the bottom of the first, Quinnipiac leadoff hitter Andre Marrero replied with a triple to right-center, but it went for naught — the sophomore was stranded at third after a groundout to first base, a walk, a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop. So Central led 1-0 after one inning.
In the top of the second, Central scored four more runs on a three-run homer followed by a solo homer, and in the bottom of the frame Quinnipiac got one run back to make it 5-1 Central. QU junior Kyle Horton singled, moved to second base on a wild pitch and scored on an error.
The Bobcats crept to within 5-3 in the bottom of the third inning when Gibson crushed a no-doubt, two-run homer after freshman Ian Ostberg was hit by a pitch.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bobcats almost drew even. Junior Kevin Huscher singled down the left-field line with two outs, bringing Marrero to the plate. After recording the toughest hit of a potential cycle in the first inning, Marrero nearly got the next-toughest, driving a ball to deep center field that appeared to be hit well enough to be a two-run homer ... but instead was caught right in front of the wall.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Blue Devils proved they're capable of scoring without a home run. They added two runs on a single, a double, a hit-by-pitch, a bunt single and a sacrifice fly.
Quinnipiac had a chance to make a dent in Central's 7-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth. The Bobcats loaded the bases on three walks, and with two outs senior Julius Saporito drove a ball to the right-centerfield gap that right fielder Christian Layne tracked down at full speed.
In the bottom of the sixth, QU scored once to cut the deficit to 7-4. With no outs, singles by Horton and Huscher placed runners on first and second, Marrero's long flyout to right field moved Horton to third, and Ostberg's RBI single brought him home.
In the top of the seventh inning, Central loaded the bases with no outs on two singles and a walk — but freshman reliever Arthur Correira bore down, recording a strikeout, a fielder's-choice putout at home, and an infield popout to shut the door. Against the final two Central batters of the inning, Correira went to a full count before retiring both and emerging unscathed.
Quinnipiac capitalized on Correira's clutch pitching, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to reduce Central's advantage to one run.
Junior Brian Moskey singled to left field, and with one out Saporito also singled to left. Moskey, who advanced to second, then scored on Horton's RBI single to center field. Huscher's base hit loaded the bases, and Marrero followed with a ground ball to Central second baseman Dean Lockery that could have been an inning-ending double play — but not with the fleet Marrero racing to first. He just beat the relay throw for a fielder's-choice RBI, and Central led 7-6 after seven innings.
While pitching bailed the Bobcats out in the seventh inning via Correira's bases-loaded recovery, their defense prevented further damage in the top of the eighth — although the D initially caused the problem.
Central was gifted a leadoff runner at second base on a throwing error by Ostberg at shortstop. A long flyout to right field and an intentional walk gave Central runners at first and third. That's when Quinnipiac catcher Anthony Cruz made a tremendous pickoff throw to nab the runner at third. However, the next batter doubled to drive in a run. When the next batter launched a drive to left field, Marrero went to the wall and made a marvelous catch to commit some home-run robbery and end the inning.
So Central extended its lead to 8-6 and made it 9-6 with an unearned run on two QU errors in the top of the ninth. Quinnipiac went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to end the game.
The Bobcats' offense was paced by Gibson (1-for-2, HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB), Horton (3-for-5, RBI, 2 R) and Huscher (3-for-5). Senior left-hander Chris Enns (0-4) started for QU and took the loss, while Central sophomore right-hander Kyle Anderson (1-3) got the win in relief.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats will host Niagara for a three-game weekend MAAC series on Saturday (doubleheader, 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.).
