Casey Herzog Gem Helps QU Softball Split Doubleheader at Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Senior pitcher Casey Herzog threw a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, as the Quinnipiac softball team took a 3-0 win over Marist. The Red Foxes bounced back to take the nightcap 9-6.
With the split, the Bobcats move to 6-4 in the MAAC and 17-21 overall, while Marist moves to 18-22 overall and 5-3 in the MAAC.
Senior center fielder Keilani Finley gave Herzog all the offense she would need in the top of the first inning when Finley had a two-run single to score junior Erin Larsen and senior Keala Cordeiro, both of whom had walked to set the table. In the fourth inning, sophomore Megan Dyson had a one-out single and came home on a two-out RBI single from senior Lexi Courtney.
The closest thing Herzog had to a jam was in the fourth inning, when a hit by pitch and a passed ball put a runner on second with nobody out. However, she bounced back to strike out the next two hitters and got out of the inning with a fly ball to Finley in center. Herzog then struck out the side in the fifth and allowed only an infield single in the seventh before closing out the win, her 13th of the year.
Quinnipiac jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the nightcap on single runs in the first and third innings. Larsen scored on a wild pitch in the first and then came home in the third for her second run of the game on an RBI double from Cordeiro. After Marist went ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the third, Dyson and freshman Brighid Douglas each hit solo homers in the top of the fourth to tie the score 4-4.
Claire Oberdorf, though, put Marist ahead to stay with a three-run homer in the bottom of the fourth before the Red Foxes tacked on two more runs to make it 9-4. Finley hit a solo homer in the fifth and the Bobcats scored an unearned run in the seventh but they couldn't come all the way back.
Courtney was 3-for-4 in the nightcap, while Dyson and Douglas were each 2-for-3 with a solo homer.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Holy Cross for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
