HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team steps out of conference on Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Holy Cross for a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Quinnipiac Softball Field.
LAST GAMES (QUINNIPIAC 3, MARIST 0; MARIST 9, QU 6)
Senior pitcher Casey Herzog threw a three-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, as the Quinnipiac softball team took a 3-0 win over Marist. The Red Foxes bounced back to take the nightcap 9-6. Senior center fielder Keilani Finley gave Herzog all the offense she would need in the top of the first inning when Finley had a two-run single to score junior Erin Larsen and senior Keala Cordeiro, both of whom had walked to set the table. In the fourth inning, sophomore Megan Dyson had a one-out single and came home on a two-out RBI single from senior Lexi Courtney. In the nightcap, Dyson and freshman Brighid Douglas each hit solo homers in the top of the fourth to tie the score 4-4, but the Red Foxes scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to take control.
QUEEN OF THE PITCHING CIRCLE
Casey Herzog leads the MAAC in pitching wins (13) and ERA (1.52). She has a healthy lead in earned run average, as no other pitcher in the league has an ERA lower than 2.00, while second place in wins is 10. She is coming off a three-hit shutout in her last outing against Marist on Saturday.
BIG BATS
Junior Erin Larsen and senior Keilani Finley rank among the top power hitters in the MAAC so far this season. Larsen is tied for second in the MAAC with seven home runs, while Finley is one behind with six in a tie for fourth. On the RBI charts, Larsen is fourth with 24 and Finley is right behind in fifth with 22, while Finley is tied for the league lead with four triples.
MULTIPLE BOBCATS EARN MAAC HONORS
Senior Keilani Finley (10 RBI in four MAAC games) was named the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on April 10 after driving in 10 runs in a four-game weekend against Niagara and Canisius. She became the latest in a long line of MAAC honorees this year. Sophomore infielder Rachel Marchuk was named the Player of the Week for games through Sunday, March 25 after batting .500 (6-for-12) in five games for the Bobcats, including a home run and two doubles. A week prior, senior pitcher Casey Herzog was named the Pitcher of the Week for games through March 18 after going 4-0 for the Bobcats with three complete games, a 0.54 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 26 innings of work. On March 11, junior Erin Larsen was named the Player of the Week after a strong performance at the USF Under Armour Showcase, batting .500 (8-16) with seven RBI over the tournament.
NEVER SAY DIE
Quinnipiac had a memorable comeback win over Maine at the USF Under Armour Showcase on March 10. The Bobcats found themselves down 8-0 after two innings, but chipped away at the lead and tied the score 9-9 in the sixth on back-to-back homers from senior outfielder Keilani Finley and junior outfielder Erin Larsen. Junior first baseman Keala Cordeiro put the Bobcats ahead to stay with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, before Larsen added an insurance run with an RBI single.
FIRST 2018 WIN A DRAMATIC ONE
Quinnipiac traveled to Orlando, Florida to open its season at the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament, hosted by the University of Central Florida. The Bobcats earned their first win of the year in dramatic fashion, taking a 5-4 victory over Kennesaw State in extra innings on a two-run walk-off homer from Miranda Magana in the bottom of the ninth.
GOING THE EXTRA INNING...OR TWO
Pitcher Casey Herzog picked up her first win of the season after pitching a nine-inning complete game in a 5-4 win over Kennesaw State, while not allowing an earned run. It was one of Herzog's two complete games in two starts over the opening weekend. Herzog leads the staff with 51 strikeouts and a stingy 1.49 ERA.
NEXT UP
The Bobcats have a big conference weekend ahead, traveling to Siena on Saturday and then welcoming in first-place Monmouth for a doubleheader on Sunday.
