HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac softball team cruised to a quick 9-1 win in five innings over Holy Cross in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Quinnipiac Softball Field, and nearly pulled off a comeback win to complete a sweep before falling in the nightcap 11-8 in eight innings to split the day.
With the split, the Bobcats move to 18-22 overall on the year, while Holy Cross moves to 9-25. Quinnipiac was down 8-6 in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap before tying the score on three doubles, but left the winning run on third before Holy Cross scored three times in the top of the eight to salvage the split.
The Bobcats scored four runs in the second inning to take control of the opener, capped off by a three-run double from junior catcher Taylor Troyan. After Holy Cross got one of the runs back in the top of the third, senior first baseman Keala Cordeiro had an RBI single in the bottom half to restore the four-run lead.
Quinnipiac was able to enforce the eight-run rule after a four-run fourth inning, capped off by a two-run triple from Cordeiro, who was 3-for-3 with three RBI on the day. Junior right fielder Erin Larsen added an RBI double in the inning, while senior shortstop Miranda Magana had an RBI single.
Senior pitcher Casey Herzog closed out her 14th win of the season by retiring the Crusaders in the top of the fifth to finish off the shortened game. Herzog allowed six hits and one run while striking out four to get the win. Magana was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the win.

Holy Cross added an insurance run to make it 8-6 in the sixth, but the Bobcats scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings. After Cordeiro doubled for her fifth hit of the doubleheader, Courtney had an RBI double to make the score 8-7 and sophomore left fielder Megan Dyson doubled down the left field line to tie it up. She moved to third base on a groundout, but was left 60 feet away from the win, before Holy Cross scored three times in the eighth to take the 11-8 victory.
