QU Softball Splits Home Opener With Wagner With 6-5 Win and 10-7 Loss

HAMDEN, Conn. - Sophomore Rachel Marchuk and junior Erin Larsen each blasted a home run as Quinnipiac split its doubleheader home opener against Wagner, winning 6-5 in game one and falling 10-7 in game two on Saturday, March 24 at the QU Softball Field.

- Casey Herzog got the start and earned her eighth win of the season.
- Herzog pitched a complete-game, giving up four earned runs, while striking out five batters.
- Rachel Marchuk led the way going 2-for-3 from the plate with a homerun and two RBIs.
- Brighid Douglas also recorded two hits and drove in a run in the win.
- Erin Larsen, Megan Dyson and Emily Czaja drove in a run apiece in the win.
- The game was scoreless until the Bobcats struck first in the bottom of the third inning.
- Dyson led the inning off with a double to left center and advanced to third after a Czaja sacrifice bunt.
- Larsen drove Dyson in off a sac-fly to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
- The Bobcats tacked on three more runs in the next inning after Douglas drove in Keala Cordeiro on a double, then Marchuk launched her first career home run over the left field fence to give Quinnipiac a 4-0 advantage.
- After Wagner scored three runs in the top of the sixth, Quinnipiac tacked on two more to make it 6-3.
- Wagner added two runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough to get past Quinnipiac.
- Abbey Long got the start and took the loss in game two.
- Kendall Brundrett gave up three earned runs and struck out four in four innings of relief.
- Four different Bobcats recorded multiple hits in the loss.
- Douglas drove in two runs.
- Larsen hit her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
- Wagner struck first, scoring a run in the top of the second.
- The Bobcats responded and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second.
- The Seahawks added five runs in the top of the third inning and never looked back.
- Larsen started a three-run rally in the third with a solo shot to start the bottom of the frame.
- Later in the inning, with runners on second and third base, Douglas singled to drive in a run.
- Marchuk followed with an RBI sac-fly to bring the score to 6-5 Wagner.
- Wagner added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 10-5 lead.
- The Bobcats attempted to rally but were only able to plate two runs and fall 10-7.
