PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey senior co-captain Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) signed a professional contact with American Hockey League's (AHL) Providence Bruins, the top affiliate of the National Hockey League's (NHL) Boston Bruins.
"I'm extremely grateful and excited for the opportunity to play for the Providence Bruins this coming season," Clifton said. "I'm thankful for all of the support from my family and Quinnipiac University. The Quinnipiac coaching staff and my teammates were instrumental in providing me with the resources and opportunities to help me achieve this goal. I'm looking forward to joining this awesome organization and getting the season started."
Clifton tied for the team lead for the most goals by a defenseman (seven) while he also assisted on seven more for 14 points. Clifton once-again was a force come playoff time as he scored in both games of a two-game sweep of Brown in the ECAC Hockey First Round and also scored in a 3-2 win against St. Lawrence of Game 3 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals. In 18 career ECAC Hockey tournament games, Clifton totaled five goals and nine assists.
"Connor was the heart and soul of our team," Bobcats' head coach Rand Pecknold said. "His character and commitment to excellence is outstanding. We wish him all the best as he moves forward with his professional career."
As a junior, Clifton was instrumental in guiding the Bobcats to an incredible season that was highlighted by the program's third ECAC Hockey Cleary Cup in four seasons, its first White Law cup, and its second NCAA Tournament Regional Championship, as well as a trip to the Frozen Four and National Championship Game, for the second time in four seasons.
Prior to being named Quinnipiac's 43rd captain in program history, his incredible season that featured career-highs in goals (7), assists (21) and points (28) was capped by ECAC Hockey Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors and the NCAA All-East Regional Team.
Clifton came to Quinnipiac after being taken in the 5th round of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Arizona Coyotes. He was also the first player in Quinnipiac history to join the Bobcats directly from the prestigious U.S. National Developmental Team.
