
Quinnipiac Men's Ice Hockey Places 21 On ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team

The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team placed 21 student-athletes on the 2016-17 ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team, as announced by the league on Monday, July 17, 2017. The league recognized a total of 248 student-athletes, including 28 as four-time recipients, of which the Bobcats placed six student-athletes.
All six of Quinnipiac's senior student-athletes, including Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota), Joe Fiala (Verona, Wisconsin), K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York), Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota), Connor Clifton and Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey), became four-time recipients after completing their four-year playing careers with academic honors in each season. Smith was honored previously as the ECAC Hockey Scholar-Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player to receive the prestigious award. Smith was also a CoSIDA Academic All-Region selection.
Juniors Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) and Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) were honored for the third time in three seasons while Kevin Duane (New Canaan, Connecticut), Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia), Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida), Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia), Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado), Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) and Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) earned their second honor in as many seasons. First-year Bobcats Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia), John Furgele (Glen Mills, Pennsylvania), Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois), Alex Whelan (Ramsey, New Jersey), Nick Jermain (Cos Cob, Connecticut) and Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska) were honored in their first season.
Players are eligible for the All-Academic team if they earn a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale or have a GPA over 3.00 over the past three semesters. One student-athlete from each institution was honored on the Commissioner's List showcasing each program's top scholar from the 2016-17 season.
