HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Canisius, 3-2, in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match-up at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Connecticut. Quinnipiac led 2-1 in the fifth, but a pair of late home runs doomed the Bobcats. Quinnipiac drops to 15-26 overall and 8-10 in the MAAC while Canisius improves to 25-16 overall and 9-6 in MAAC play.
Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) was 2-for-3 for the Bobcats while Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Moskey batted a team-high .444 (4-for-9) for the three-game series while Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) was 3-for-8 (.375) with two home runs and a double as well as a team-high four runs scored. On Sunday, Batten was 1-for-3 with his third home run of the season.
After Canisius manufactured a run in its first at-bats, Batten quickly tied it up with his third home run of the season. Batten's no-doubter left the Golden Griffins' left fielder frozen as he watched it rocket over the fence. With Batten's second home run in as many days, the senior joined Tim Binkoski '07 as the second player in program history to record 240 hits in his career.
In the bottom of the fifth, Saporito led off the inning with a laser through the right side of the infield before he moved to second on a text-book sacrifice bunt by Anthony Cruz. Saporito then moved to third on a ground-out by Ryan Nelson and scored on a wild pitch to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Jake Lumley turned on a two-out, two-strike offering from Hitt and blasted a solo home run over the right field fence to tie the game at 2-2. In the eighth, Brandon Shileikis (North Dighton, Massachusetts) replaced Hitt to start the inning. Ryan Stekl jumped on Shileikis' first pitch of the inning for a home run to left field that gave the Golden Griffins a 3-2 lead. Shileikis retired two batters before a hard-hit ball by Stephen Bennett ended his day in favor of Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Connecticut).
Davis held Canisius scoreless for the final four outs of the game, while his counterpart, Golden Griffins closer Tyler Smith was equally effective in earning his eighth save of the season. Quinnipiac loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but Smith was able to get his ground ball to end the game.
Quinnipiac is back in action when it hosts Central Connecticut State on Tuesday, May 2 for a non-conference match-up at 3 p.m. at the QU Baseball Field in Hamden, Connecticut.
