5/2/2017 7:13:00 PM | Baseball
Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI while Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Joseph Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) was 2-for-4 with three runs scord. Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, Tennessee) was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored while Mike Palladino (Rockville Center, New York) was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
For Batten, the Bobcats' senior shortstop now stands at 243 career hits, one shy of the all-time record held by Tim Binkoski '07. In addition, Batten entered the game with 98 career RBI before knocking home four more to become the 10th player in Quinnipiac history to reach the 100 RBI mark. The last player to reach the 100 RBI was Joe Poletsky in 2011. Batten also joins Binkoski as the only two players in Quinnipiac history to record 225 hits, 125 runs scored and 100 RBI for their careers. His two doubles also put him in a tie for ninth place with 38, matching Brian Sabatella.
Central Connecticut scored in each inning of the nine-inning affair that ended nine-minutes short of the four-hour mark. Quinnipiac's 13 runs scored match it's season-high that it scored against Saint Peter's on Apr. 22, 2017. CCSU jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Quinnipiac pulled within a run with a six-run second inning. After CCSU pushed its lead to 8-6, the Bobcats countered in the bottom of the third with a run to make it 8-7. It was the closest Quinnipiac would make it as CCSU rattled off seven runs over the next four at-bats to take a 15-7 lead through the top of the seventh inning. Quinnipiac put up a five-spot in the bottom of the seventh to pull withing three runs before a three-run eighth and a six-run ninth doomed the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac will return to action this weekend when it travels to Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, New York to take on Manhattan in a three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series on May 6-7. On Saturday, May 6, the Bobcats and Jaspers will play a nine-inning game at 2 p.m. followed by a seven-inning game. On Sunday, May 7, the two teams will play a single nine-inning game at 2 p.m.
