RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Junior attack Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.) had four goals and an assist, and became the 13th Quinnipiac player to reach 100 career points, to lead the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team to a 12-6 win over Manhattan on Saturday evening at Gaelic Park.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 2-6 on the year and break into the win column in the MAAC at 1-2, after outshooting Manhattan 54-22 (33-8 in the first half). Manhattan falls to 2-8 overall and 0-3 in the MAAC with the loss. Freshman Tyler DeVito (Amawalk, N.Y.) made his first start for Quinnipiac and had two goals and an assist for his first three college points.
Feldman came into the game with 99 career points, and scored a goal just 1:46 into the game to give him 100. It was also his 18th straight game with at least one goal, dating back to last season against Fairfield, which is the fifth longest active streak in the country. The goal came off a feed from DeVito, who started the scoring with his first collegiate goal at the 1:19 mark.
The Bobcats kept the early momentum going, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter. After Manhattan closed to within 2-1, junior Ryan Lawson (Niskayuna, N.Y.) scored to make it a 3-1 game and Feldman followed with his second to push the lead to 4-1.
Mannattan pulled back within 4-3 with 9:14 left in the second quarter, but the Bobcats regrouped and took a 6-3 lead into the half. Junior midfielder Ryan Corcoran (Stratford, Conn.) came around from behind the net to score, and right off the ensuing faceoff, defender Riley Palmer (Oshawa, Ontario) scored for the second straight game to make it 6-3 at the break.
Feldman started the second half by recording a hat trick with a man-up goal on a feed from sophomore midfielder Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.). After Manhattan answered, DeVito scored his second on a Feldman feed and senior attack Drew D'Antonio (Norwalk, Conn.) pushed the lead to 9-4 with 3:54 left in the third.
Manhattan scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to close to 9-5, but the Bobcats scored the next two, as Feldman tallied his fourth (finishing the day with 104 career points and 91 career goals), and long-stick midfielder Adam Bellamy (St. Catherine, Ontario) scored in transition. Sophomore attack Mike Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) closed out the scoring with a man-up goal to make the final 12-6.
Senior goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.) had seven saves, as the close defense of Palmer, junior Mike Ruane (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Bryce Nalls (Fairfax Station, Va.) kept the Jasper attempts to a minimum. Junior face-off specialist Will Vitelli (Milford, Conn.) also had a key role in Quinnipiac's statistical dominance, winning 17 of 22 face-offs. Bellamy finished with nine ground balls and Vitelli had eight to lead the way defensively.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday for its final home game of the season when it meets Marist at 7 p.m. at Yale's Reese Stadium. The game will be a rematch of last year's MAAC title game, which the Bobcats won 13-9.
