NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-4 deficit after three quarters to have a chance to tie in the closing seconds, but Marist held on for a 9-8 win on Saturday evening at Reese Stadium.
The loss moves Quinnipiac to 2-7 on the year and 1-3 in the MAAC, with the three losses by a combined four goals. It also snaps a 12-game winning streak in April for the Bobcats, dating back to the 2014 season. Marist improves to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the MAAC with the win.
Quinnipiac honored its four seniors prior to the game, including fifth-year goalie Jack Brust (Baltimore, Md.), attack Drew D'Antonio and midfielders Kevin Diehl (Towson, Md.) and Zach Malsky (Glastonbury, Conn.).
The Bobcats went scoreless in the third quarter as Marist extended its 5-4 halftime lead (which came on a second-quarter buzzer-beater from Joe Tierney) to 7-4 heading into the final stanza. But Quinnipiac regrouped and cut the Red Fox lead down to a single goal three times, the first coming just 2:49 into the fourth quarter after back-to-back goals from sophomore Matt Frost (Spring Lake, N.J.) and junior midfielder Ryan Lawson (Niskayuna, N.Y.).
Marist got one of the goals back with 7:43 to play on an extra-man opportunity, when Clayton Frank scored on a feed from J.D. Recor. Junior Brian Feldman (Canandaigua, N.Y.), who earlier in the day extended his goal streak to 19 games, tallied his second with 4:02 left to make it an 8-7 game, but Marist answered again on a Kyle Quinn goal with 2:52 on the clock to make the score 9-7.
Marist seemed to have the game wrapped up with 52 seconds left when the Bobcats took a one-minute slashing penalty, but the Red Foxes turned the ball over on the ensuing restart, and Lawson came down the other way and scored a shorthanded goal into the upper corner to close the deficit to 9-8. Junior Will Vitelli (Milford, Conn.) won the ensuing face-off and the Bobcats had one final chance, but junior midfielder Anthony Carchietta (Syosset, N.Y.), who beat Marist last year with one second left in overtime, was forced to shoot from a sharp angle with the Bobcats still playing a man down and missed wide as the buzzer sounded, enabling Marist to hold on.
Frost scored the game's first goal on a Lawson feed, and freshman Tyler DeVito (Amawalk, N.Y.) added two first-half goals to give him two straight two-goal games in his first two collegiate starts. Feldman tied the score 4-4 with his first of the day with 43 seconds left in the second quarter, but Marist was able to just beat the buzzerr and take the one-goal lead into the break.
Brust finished with eight saves in his final collegiate home game, while Brian Corrigan had seven for Marist. Lawson and Frost each had two goals and an assist for the Bobcats, while Tierney had three goals and an assist for Marist and Recor added a goal and three assists.
The Bobcats will have a week off before returning to action with a road game at Siena on Friday, April 21 at 4 p.m.
