SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Senior shortstop Matthew Batten (Shelton, Conn.) was 3-for-4, but USC Upstate used a three-run seventh inning to take a 5-3 win over the Quinnipiac baseball team on Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of a three-game series at Harley Park.
With the loss, the Bobcats conclude the southern portion of their schedule with a 7-10 record. USC Upstate levels its record at 11-11 on the year with the win.
The Bobcats trailed 2-1 through five innings, but went ahead 3-2 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Senior third baseman Joseph Burns (Shelton, Conn.) had an RBI single to tie it, and sophomore left fielder Brian Moskey (Higganum, Conn.) had an RBI single to score Batten with the go-ahead run.
However, USC Upstate responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, as Drank Harris led off with a double and Pat Raiff's ensuing bunt turned into a single to put runners on the corners with nobody out. After a fielder's choice tied the score, Devon Ortiz hit a sacrifice fly to put the Spartans ahead, and Hunter Gilbert tacked on a two-out RBI single to make the score 5-3.
USC Upstate closer Brian Hathaway then took over for the final two innings and did not allow a hit, while overcoming three errors. A pair of infield throwing errors put runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth, but Hathaway was able to get a ground ball to second to escape the jam. His own throwing error with two outs in the ninth prolonged Quinnipiac's life, but he got the next out on a fly ball to center to end the contest.
The Bobcats scored first in the top of the third as junior catcher Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Mass.) led off with a double and came home on an RBI single from senior center fielder Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.). USC Upstate then tied it in the bottom of the third on an infield single from Charlie Carpenter and went ahead 2-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Raiff.
Batten was the only player on the Bobcats with multiple hits. Junior Wyatt Hamilton (Falmouth, Mass.) got the start and allowed two runs on four hits over four innings to get a no-decision. Gilbert and Harris were each 2-for-3 for USC Upstate.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Wednesday when it opens the Northeast portion of the schedule with a road game against Yale.
