MONMOUTH, New Jersey- Quinnipiac baseball dropped its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener to Monmouth, 17-7, in the first of a three-game series in West Long Branch, New Jersey. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 7-11 overall while they open MAAC play at 0-1 with the hopes of pulling ahead with a doubleheader on Saturday. Monmouth improves to 4-13 overall while they start the year at 1-0 in conference play.

Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) and Joey Burns (Shelton, Connecticut) led the hit parade for Quinnipiac with two hits apiece while Burns also scored a run for the Bobcats. Matthew Oestreicher (North Haven, Connecticut) also connected for his first homer of the year as he drove in three runs.

The Bobcats trailed early, 7-0, before getting on the board in the third. Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) singled to left field, advancing Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) to third base. Saporito came around to score on an infield error by Monmouth, giving the Bobcats their first run of the day.

In the fourth inning, the Bobcats kept their hot bats working as Ryan Nelson (Knoxville,Tennessee) singled up the middle to center field, scoring Burns. Later in the inning, Brian Moskey (Higganum, Connecticut) flied out to right field, but hit it deep enough to allow Scafariello to score, cutting the Monmouth lead to 7-3.

Quinnipiac starter Robbie Hitt (Suffield, Connecticut) settled in after giving up seven runs over the first two innings and allowed one baserunner through the fifth inning. In the sixth, a pair of errors doomed Hitt's come-back bid and ended his day in favor of Chris Enns. Monmouth continued their onslaught, however, and pushed across 10 runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The Bobcats' big inning came in the ninth when they plated four runs late in the game, keyed by Oestreicher's three-run homer.

The two teams will resume play on Saturday, Mar. 25 when they meet again for a doubleheader. Saturday's twin bill feature a nine-inning game at noon and a seven-inning game at 3 P.M.
