PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey freshman goalie Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska) posted his first career shutout with a 21-save performance in a 1-0 win against Brown. With the win, the nationally-ranked No. 19 Bobcats improves to 14-11-2 overall and 9-6-1 in ECAC Hockey play while Brown drops to 4-17-1 including a 3-12-0 record in league play.
Shortridge was outstanding for the Bobcats, most notably in the closing minutes of the game with Quinnipiac on the penalty kill. Shortridge withstood a flurry of shots with just under seven minutes of play, capped by a sprawling safe on a loose puck in the crease followed by a save on a shot through traffic in front of the net. The Bobcats first-year goalie improves to 6-4-0 on the year and 4-1-0 in ECAC Hockey.
With a shutout in their last outing at Meehan Auditorium, on Dec. 5, 2015, the Bobcats have now held Brown scoreless for 131:58 dating back to Mark Naclerio's goal in the third period of Quinnipiac's 5-3 win on Jan. 30, 2015.
Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) scored Quinnipiac's only goal in the win with assists on the play credited to Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) and Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta). Lost in the Bobcats' victory was the play of Brown freshman goalie Gavin Nieto who stopped 31 of Quinnipiac's 32 shots on goal.
Pieper's goal came just under seven minutes into the game when he tipped the puck in the Bobcats' defensive zone to MacMaster. MacMaster zipped the puck across ice to Landon Smith at the red line, where it was actually intercepted by Pieper and tipped to Smith. Smith gave it back to Peiper as they cross the blue line before Peiper found the opposite post to give Quinnipiac a one-goal lead that held as the Bobcats head into the first intermission.
The score held through the second period as well as neither team was able to generate much offense. The second period was highlighted by the game's first penalty when Brown's Josh McArdle was called for interference with 1:34 to go in the middle frame. Quinnipiac rifled two shots on goal before Brown was saved by the bell as both teams headed to the locker room for the second break.
The third period saw Quinnipiac whistled for and killing three penalties while Shortridge's heroics held Brown off the board.
The Bobcats will head to New Haven on Saturday, Feb. 4 to take on Yale at Ingalls Rink at 7 p.m. After this weekend, the Bobcats' regular-season schedule comes to down to five games, with a home game against Clarkson on Feb. 10 followed by a weekend in the Capitol District against Union and Rensselaer on Feb. 17-18, respectively before hosting Yale on Friday, Feb. 24 live on SNY and Brown on Feb. 25 for Senior Night at High Point Solutions Arena.
