
Offensive Outburst Leads QU Baseball Past UTSA, 12-10

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Liam Scafariello (Southington, CT) continued his red-hot streak to start the 2017 season on Sunday afternoon at Roadrunner field, leading Quinnipiac baseball past the University of Texas at San Antonio, 12-10. The Bobcats improve to 3-1 on the year, taking 3-of-4 games vs. UTSA to begin the 2017 tilt.
Scafariello belted two more home runs in the win, giving him five in the Bobcats' first four games.
Joseph Burns (Shelton, CT) recorded four hits, and Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, NY) and Matthew Batten (Shelton, CT) each had three hits in the win. Palladino had three singles, three runs scored and two RBI's in the victory, Batten had three singles, one run and one RBI, and Burns had three singles, two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.
Burns got the starting nod on the mound for the fourth and final game of the series, pitching the first 3.0 innings (two hits, two runs). Colin Donnelly (Bel Air, MD) tossed the next 2.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. Next up was Mike DellaMedaglia (Somers, NY), who came on to record the last out of the sixth inning, retiring the only batter he faced. Chris Enns (Canton, CT) then went 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and four runs. Matthew Osieja (Wyckoff, NY) was next on the hill, giving up one hit and two runs - both unearned - over a third of an inning. Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, CT) went the last 1.1 innings, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out two.
Quinnipiac scored two runs in the third, one in the sixth and then nine in the seventh inning of play.
Palladino and Burns each grabbed an RBI single in the third inning for the Bobcats first two runs of the contest. Bryan Moskey (Higganum, CT) then doubled down the right field line in the sixth inning to bring in another run, making it 3-2 Quinnipiac, at the time.
Scafariello then started the scoring in the big seventh innings, belting a two-run homer to left field to make it 5-4 QU. Moskey then reached out a fielder's choice and Batten came around to score to make it 6-4 Bobcats, followed by a Ryan Nelson (Knoxville, TN) single up the middle to plate two runs and make it 8-4. Palladino singled up the middle moments later to score two more runs, followed by Scafariello's second home run of the game two plate two more and make it a 12-4 lead.
The Bobcats registered 12 runs on 14 hits and six walks in total - including three extra-base hits. Quinnipiac is back in action next weekend, squaring off with Campbell University in North Carolina from Feb 24-26, 2017.
