SCHENECTADY, New York – Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to No. 7/7 Union, 4-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Messa Rink in Schenectady, New York. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 16-13-2 overall and 10-8-1 in ECAC Hockey play while first-place Union moves to 21-8-2 overall and 14-4-1 in league action.
Quinnipiac senior K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) scored Quinnipiac's only goal of the game, unassisted. In goal, Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska), who entered the game after a three-goal first period by the Dutchmen, stopped 15 of Union's 16 shots over the second and third periods.
A dead-locked first period quickly took a turn for the worst for the Bobcats as Union rattled off three goals in one-minute-and-forty-seconds with five minutes to go in the first to head into the first break with a 3-0 lead. J.C. Brassard scored his second of the season to put the Dutchmen on the board before Brett Supinski wristed a shot from the slot just thirty-two seconds later to grab a 2-0 lead. Spencer Foo made it 3-0 with his 21st goal of the year after going bar-down on a wrister from the face-off circle to the left of Quinnipiac starting goalie Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin).
Union's three-goal explosion opened the door for Shortridge to start the second period. Quinnipiac and Union once-again played back-and-forth for most of the second period before Mike Vecchione scored his team-leading 24th goal of the season to give Union a 4-0 lead with just under four minutes to go in the second period.
Two minutes later, Tiefenwerth finally broke through, scoring with a little bit of luck and a Quinnipiac-friendly bounce. Tiefenwerth started the play when he carried the puck up the wall into the neutral zone before handing it to Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia). Davidson moved the puck to Kevin McKernan (Millbury, Massachusetts) who sent it back to Tiefenwerth. With the puck loose behind the Union goal, a Union defenseman picked it up but lost it in the corner before taking a hit from Davidson. Tiefenwerth picked it up between the wall and face-off circle and stepped below the goal line. He then wristed the puck off a Union defender and past Dutchmen goalie Alex Sakellaropoulos to cut Union's lead to three goals at 4-1 heading into the second intermission.
The Bobcats are back in action on when they travel to Troy, New York to take on Rensselaer on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. at Houston Field House.
