QU Men's Basketball Hangs On For 68-66 Home Win Over UMass

HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac men's basketball team led for almost the entire second half, but had to hold on down the stretch to capture a 68-66 home win over UMass on Wednesday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center. Four players scored in double figures for the Bobcats, led by senior guard Isaiah Washington with 14, while senior guard Cameron Young made two late foul shots to finish with 11, while splitting a UMass trap with six seconds left to dribble out the clock.

- Quinnipiac went 4-4 at the foul line in the final 30 seconds to push the lead to four points both times. Freshman guard Rich Kelly (Shelton, Conn.) made two with 27 seconds left to make the score 66-62, and after UMass cut it to two, senior guard Cameron Young (Los Angeles, Calif.) made two with 15 seconds left to make the score 68-64.
- UMass responded with an offensive rebound and follow-up basket from Rashaan Holloway with six seconds left, and Quinnipiac called their final timeout when they couldn't get the ball inbounds, On the ensuing inbounds pass, Young was trapped near the corner, but split the double team and avoided a foul to race the length of the court and dribble out the clock.
- The Bobcats led 38-29 at the break and took their largest lead at 41-29 when senior guard Isaiah Washington (Williamsport, Pa.) knocked down a three-pointer on the first possession.
- UMass took its only lead of the second half with 5:44 to go on a Holloway basket, but it lasted only 37 seconds before Kelly put the Bobcats ahead to stay with two foul shots.
- Kelly found Young for a big three-pointer at the end of the shot clock with 2:52 to play to put Quinnipiac ahead 64-58. C.J. Anderson (game-high 23 points) had a basket with 2:31 to play, and the score remained frozen at 64-60 until Anderson scored again with 36 seconds left, setting up the dramatic finish,.
- Junior guard Aaron Robinson (Takoma Park, Md. - pictured) had a big effort off the bench with new career highs in both scoring (8) and rebounding (7), shooting 3-4 from the floor.
- Senior forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) had all 12 of his points in the first half before foul trouble limited him after halftime.
- Quinnipiac had only seven turnovers on the day, the first time they have kept their turnover count in single digits this season
- The Bobcats finished 22-27 from the foul line (81.5 percent), a season-high, including 12-14 in the second half (85.7 percent).
- Quinnipiac won for the first time in the series with UMass. The Minutemen were 3-0 in a three-game series from 2009-10 through 2011-12, with the three wins coming by a combined 11 points.
- The Bobcats' two home wins this season have been by a combined three points, including an opening-day 78-77 win over Dartmouth.
