CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts –No. 15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to No. 4 Harvard, 5-2, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 11-9-2 overall and 6-5-1 in ECAC Hockey while Harvard improves to 10-2-1 overall and 6-1-1 in league action.
Thomas Aldworth (Keller, Texas) and Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) both scored for the Bobcats, while Shiplo also picked up an assist on Aldworth's goal. Aldworth scored his second goal in as many games and his fifth overall of the season midway through the first period. In addition, Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines,Florida), Tanner MacMaster (Calgary, Alberta) and Kevin Duane (New Canaan, Connecticut) all picked up assists in the game. Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) got the start for Quinnipiac but was replaced in the second period by Andrew Shortridge (Alaska, Anchorage). Shortridge stopped all of Harvard's 11 shots on goal.
The Bobcats found themselves on the power play after an interference call on Harvard. Priskie and Shiplo played the puck back-and-forth in the neutral zone before Shiplo handed it Aldworth just above the blue line. Aldworth stick-handled and walked around three Harvard defenders before beating Harvard goalie Merrick Madsen with a back-hand shot.
With three minutes left in the period, Harvard tied the game when Sean Malone took a pass from Tyler Moy from behind the Bobcats' goal and tipped it over the pad of Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) to knot the game at 1-1.
In the second, Harvard scored three power play goals in forty-four seconds to jump out to a 4-1 lead. Nathan Krusko scored twice for the Crimson, the first coming on a 5-on-3 power play at the 5:48 mark. Alexander Kerfoot scored at the 6:14 mark before Krusko scored his second goal of the game at the 6:32 mark to give the Crimson a three-goal lead.
Controversy surrounded Krusko's first goal as Quinnipiac contested that the puck was kicked past Truehl on a scrum in the Bobcats' crease. The ensuing conversation finally resulted in a review of the goal after several minutes of protest by the Bobcats' bench that resulted in head coach Rand Pecknold being ejected from the game.
Late in the third period, with the Bobcats on the power play and skated with an empty net, Duane won a draw in front of the Harvard zone over to MacMaster. MacMaster found Shiplo on the opposite point who walked in and wristed a shot to the top right corner to pull the Bobcats within two goals, 4-2. Harvard added an empty net goal in the closing seconds to increase its lead to 5-2.
Quinnipiac will travel to Hanover, New Hampshire to face Dartmouth in an ECAC Hockey match-up at Thompson Arena on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017 at 7 p.m.
