No. 17 QU Men's Ice Hockey Dealt 4-2 Loss By Arizona State

HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 17 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to Arizona State, 4-2, in a non-conference match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 14-11-2 overall while ASU improves to 10-18-2.
Quinnipiac senior assistant captain Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) had a hand in both of the Bobcats' goals as he scored his team-leading 11th to put Quinnipiac on the board before picking up the second assist on his brother Connor's fourth goal of the season. Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) rank his point streak to five games with a pair of assists while Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) also had an assist in the loss. In goal, Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) stopped nine of the 10 shots on goal that he saw in teh final 36 minutes of play after enter in relief for Andrew Shortridge (Anchorage, Alaska).
A slow start to the game set the tone for the Bobcats as Arizona State scored twice in the final six minutes to head into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead. Anthony Croston scored his first of two goals for the evening in the 14th minute of play before Brinson Pasichnuk gave the Sun Devils a two-goal lead with three minutes to go in the first frame. Croston popped in his second of the night just 22-seconds into the second period to set Quinnipiac back into a 3-0 deficit.
Late in the second period, Tim Clifton appeared to put Quinnipiac on the board, on the power play, but the goal was overturned after video review deemed Clifton used a kicking motion to beat ASU goalie Joey Daccord. Clifton would score on the next shift after Martin handed the puck to Priskie who carried it below the goal line before feeding Clifton. Clifton wristed a shot past Daccord to cut Arizona State's lead to 3-1. The goal was also Clifton's 20th career power-play goal, making him one of two players in NCAA Division I hockey, along with Omaha's Austen Ortega, with 20 career power-play goals.
Moments after Clifton seemingly stole the momentum back in Quinnipiac's favor, ASU's Jakob Stridsberg's one-timer from the point weaved its way through traffic in front of Truehl and found the back of the net to give the Sun Devils a three-goal lead int he closing minutes of the period.
Just under six minutes into the third period, Tim Clifton picked up the puck behind the Arizona State bench and fed Martin in the face-off circle. Martin one-timed the shot off of Daccord's pad with the rebound landing on Connor Clifton's tape at the opposite point. Clifton ripped a shot on goal where Martin set a screen on Daccord and the puck caromed off the stick of the Arizona State defender in front of the net resulting in a re-direct that beat Daccord and pulled the Bobcats within two goals.
What follows was a frantic 14-minutes of hockey as the Bobcats doubled-up their shots down the stretch. Quinnipiac outs-shot Arizona State, 55-19, including a 28-1 mark in the final period.The Bobcats were also 1-for-6 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Tim Clifton, Priskie and Martin all produced three points in the series with Priskie posting two goals and an assist; Clifton logging a goal and two assists; and Martin assisting on three goals. The Bobcats will play at Brown on Friday, Feb. 3 and at Yale on Saturday, Feb. 4 before returning home on Friday, Feb. 10 to host Clarkson. After the team's final road trip of the season to Union and RPI on Feb. 17-18, respectively, the Bobcats host Yale on Friday, Feb. 24 and Brown for Senior Night on Saturday, Feb. 25 to wrap-up the 2016-17 regular season.
