No. 15 QU Men's Ice Hockey Falls To No. 19 Cornell, 2-1

HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 15 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to No. 19 Cornell, 2-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the loss, Quinnipiac drops to 13-10-2 overall and 8-6-1 in ECAC Hockey while Cornell improves to 11-4-1 overall and 6-2-1 in league play.

Cornell got on the board just under three minutes into the when they took advantage of a delayed penalty and an extra attacker. Mitch Vanderlaan carried the puck along the wall and fed Brendan Smith at the point. Smith bombed a shot on Bobcats' goalie Andrew Shortridge that sailed wide of the Bobcats' goal. Jeff Kubiak was waiting on the opposite post for the rebound off the boards and converted on his second goal of the year.
Three minutes later, Quinnipiac converted on a power-play opportunity when Martin wired a shot through traffic that beat Cornell goalie Mitch Gillam to tie the game at 1-1. Priskie fed Rafferty at the point, who spun and zipped the puck to Martin in the opposite face-off circle. Martin one-timed the pass on goal, finding the back of the net to tie the game. For Martin, it was his fifth point in the last three games. Priskie now has a goal and four assists in his last five games while Rafferty runs his point streak to three games.
Midway through the second period, Cornell converted on the power play after Alec McCrea won a battle in the corner and handed the puck to Matt Buckles below the goal line. Buckles rushed on goal and attempted to jam it past Shortridge but was denied. Alex Rauter crashed the net and picked up the loose puck just above the crease before poking it past Shortridge to give Cornell a 2-1 lead.
Quinnipiac will enjoy a weekend off before returning to action against Arizona State for a two-game series on Jan. 27-28 at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center.
