HAMDEN, Conn. – Following an impressive road win to wrap up non-conference action, Quinnipiac men's soccer heads into Sunday afternoon's match vs. Niagara looking to start out MAAC play on a high note. The Bobcats are one of only four MAAC teams that tallied four wins prior to the start of conference action.
LAST TIME OUT
Quinnipiac men's soccer concluded non-conference play in dramatic fashion on Tuesday, Sept. 20, topping St. John's, 1-0, at Belson Stadium. The win was the Bobcats' second-ever victory in program history vs. a BIG EAST opponent. Junior defender William Pustari (North Haven, Connecticut) scored his first-career goal in the victory, while freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece) earned his third-career shutout for the Bobcats.
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES
Niagara men's soccer has gone 0-5-1 since topping Robert Morris 4-0 in its season opener on Aug. 26. The Purple Eagles enter Sunday having lost four straight contests. Mackenzie Roach leads the offensive attack for Niagara so far in 2016 with two goals and one assist in six games. Absalom Solorio, Konrad Zydowicz, and Mbongeni Tshuma each have recorded a goal and an assist. Goalkeeper Steve Casey has started five of the Purple Eagles' six games so far, recording 16 saves and allowing seven goals.
LAST MEETING vs. NIAGARA
Quinnipiac and Niagara played to a tie on Oct. 3, 2015 in New York. Max Rothenbuecher (Munich, Germany) gave the Bobcats' a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, but Niagara's Alex Dimitriu answered 12 minutes later to tie the game. The tie marked the end of Quinnipiac's four game winning streak against Niagara.
HOT SHOT
The Bobcats have controlled possession much more in their last three games, and the numbers show it. Quinnipiac has attempted 30 of its 64 total shots in 2016 during the last three games, including a season-high 11 shots vs. St. John's in its latest road win.
FRESHMAN PHENOM
Eaamon Whelan was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on Sept. 19, earning the Bobcats' first major weekly award this year. The freshman has registered four goals and 12 shots, both a team-high, so far this year. Whelan netted the Bobcats' first goal of the year against Louisville on Oct. 29, then scored again in a win over Lafayette on Sept. 4 before recording two goals Quinnipiac's last time out vs. Yale.
NEWCOMER IN NET
Chrysostomos Iakovidis has started in six of Quinnipiac's eight games this season. The freshman goalkeeper has tallied three shutouts so far this season, and has a 0.70 goals-against average thus far with an .875 save percentage. At this pace, Iakovididis would join the program's all-time single-season Top 10 list in each category:
JAMES DOIG
James Doig (Liverpool, England) started in 38 games during his first two seasons at Quinnipiac, scoring twice with nine assists in that span. He netted a goal in Quinnipiac's loss to Holy Cross on Sept. 17, and has assisted on two goals so far in 2016. Doig suffered a season-ending injury during the third game of the 2015 year.
MAX ROTHENBUECHER
Rothenbuecher, a 2016 co-captain, assisted on Scheiderman's goal vs. UMass Lowell. He scored two goals and added one assist in 2015. He had the game-winner vs. Canisius in the MAAC Tournament on Nov. 5, 2015. Rothenbuecher, who played in the Bayern Munich FC system for 10 years, has three goals and five assists in his career at Quinnipiac.
RYAN SCHEIDERMAN
Ryan Scheiderman (Brick, NJ) scored Quinnipiac's lone goal in a 2-1 loss vs. UMass Lowell on Sept. 10, heading in a feed from Max Rothenbuecher (Munich, Germany) with 17:11 left in the second half. The senior had two goals last season, which was tied for team-best. He has four goals and four assists in his career at Quinnipiac.
RASHAWN DALLY
Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, CT) has a team-leading two assists for the Bobcats so far in 2016, both coming in a win over Lafayette at home on Sept. 4, 2016. The sophomore had one goal and two assists in 2015. He earned a spot on the Jamaican National Under-20 Team this summer, playing in the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) U-20 Qualifiers in June. Jamaica went 2-1 in qualifiers with wins over host Dominican Republic and Dominica.
MATTHEW TAYLOR
The sophomore registered two goals and three assists in 2015 for a team-high seven points. Matthew Taylor (Dublin, Ireland) netted the game-winning goal against Manhattan on Oct. 14, 2015, on a 25-yard blast in the third minute.
CONOR MCCOY
The freshman had a goal on Sept. 2 against Fordham, then recorded an assist on Sept. 17 vs. Holy Cross. Conor McCoy played U16 and U17 with Shelbourne United FC, Dublin in the Dublin District Schoolboys League.
QUINNIPIAC PICKED NO. 7 IN MAAC
The Bobcats were picked to finish seventh in the MAAC in a preseason poll of the league's coaches. Quinnipiac received 51 points in the poll, putting it in between Marist in sixth place with 57 points and Canisius in eighth place with 47. Monmouth was selected as the favorite (120 points), while Rider (103 points) finished No. 2.
