Quinnipiac men's ice hockey junior Sam Anas (Potomac, Maryland) has signed a two-year, entry level contract with the National Hockey League's (NHL) Minnesota Wild, as announced on Friday, April 15, 2016.
"I am very excited that I have signed with the Minnesota Wild," Anas said. "I am also very proud that I will earn my degree in three years here at Quinnipiac. I can't thank the staff and everyone involved in the program enough. They have truly developed me as a player and more importantly, as a person. The last three years were the best of my life and for that reason it was a very hard decision to leave. I love Quinnipiac and will always be a Bobcat. I look forward to the next chapter in my life as a professional hockey player."
Anas is coming off one of the best seasons in Quinnipiac men's ice hockey history where he was named to the AHCA/CCM All-America First Team, ECAC Hockey First Team, New England Division I Men's Hockey All-Star and NCAA Tournament All-East Region Team.
"We want to thank Sam for his contribution to Quinnipiac hockey both on and off the ice," Quinnipiac men's ice hockey head coach Rand Pecknold said. "He has had three amazing years here: National Rookie of the Year followed up by back-to-back All-American season. We wish him all the best as he pursues his NHL dream."
Anas led ECAC Hockey and the team in goals (24), points (50), power-play goals (10), power-play assists (14) and power-play points (24). He also finished second on the team with 26 assists. Anas' 50-point season was the fifth in Quinnipiac men's ice hockey Division I history and his 24 goals were the fourth most in a single-season in the program's Division I history.
In his career, Anas tallied 69 goals and 63 assists for 132 points. His 69 goals are the second most in Quinnipiac Division I history while his 132 points in just three seasons rank 10th in Division I program history. As a freshman, Anas was named the Hockey Commissioners' Association Tim Taylor National Rookie of the Year and ECAC Hockey Co-Rookie of the Year, and followed that up as a sophomore with AHCA/CCM Hockey All-American Second Team honors.
