Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team opens postseason play when it faces Rider on Thursday at 5 p.m. in the first game of the 2015-16 MAAC Tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York.
Quinnipiac and Rider will face each other for the right to advance to play top-seeded Monmouth in the quarterfinals on Friday at 7 p.m. on ESPN3. The winner of that game will then earn a day of rest before the semifinals on Sunday, and then the championship game will be played on Monday night at 7 p.m. on ESPN.
The Bobcats will be trying to treat the start of postseason as a new lease on life after struggling during the regular season to a 9-20 record (6-14 in the MAAC). Quinnipiac is in its third season in the MAAC, and reached the semifinals in its inaugural year in 2013-14, before falling to eventual champion Manhattan after point guard Umar Shannon was lost to a knee injury in the final week of the regular season. Last year, the Bobcats were upset by Marist in the opening round after sweeping the Red Foxes during the regular season.
Quinnipiac and Rider (12-19, 8-12 MAAC) split the two meetings this season, with each team winning on its home floor. On Jan. 4 at the TD Bank Center, junior forward Donovan Smith (Chicago, Ill.) had 15 points and 14 rebounds to help the Bobcats to a 64-60 win. Quinnipiac had a 15-point lead with less than four minutes left in that contest, before Teddy Okereafor (30 points) exploded late to get the Broncs back within just two points before Smith sealed it with two foul shots with four seconds left. Rider won the rematch in Lawrenceville 75-52 on Jan. 24, after Quinnipiac spent the previous day snowed in to their hotel during a blizzard.
Senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) leads the Bobcats in scoring heading into the postseason at 13.3 points per game, while junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) is second at 10.2 points per game. Harris is fifth in the MAAC in three-point percentage at 40.2 percent, and has hit two or more three-pointers in 22 of his 29 games. Sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (9.8 ppg) has scored in double figures in his last six games, starting with a career-high 28 against Fairfield on Feb. 13, as he closed the season strong after missing a month with a knee injury. Smith (1.8) and Daniels (1.7) rank second and third in the MAAC in blocked shots and third and fifth, respectively, on Quinnipiac's single-season list at the Division I level.
Quinnipiac is having another strong season on the boards, currently leading the nation in both rebounding average (43.8 rpg) and offensive rebounding average 17.0 orpg). The Bobcats have led the nation in at least one rebounding category for each of the last five years, and have only been outrebounded seven times in the last four years (five of which have been this season), going 111-7-4 on the boards in that span. Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) has been a key part of that success this season, ranking sixth in the MAAC in rebounding and first in offensive rebounding per game (3.6), which ranks him 25th in the nation despite only playing 23.4 minutes a game.
The Bobcats will be trying to make a MAAC Tournament run with a team that is inexperienced in postseason play. Collectively, Quinnipiac has only 17 career conference tournament points, led by nine from senior guard James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va.). The Bobcats have a total of 2,649 career NCAA points overall on its roster, including 2,514 at Quinnipiac and the 135 that senior center Will Simonton (Vienna, Va.) scored at Illinois-Chicago. The 2,649 points is the exact same total that all-time leading scorer Frank Vieira '57 had at Quinnipiac.
The opening round of the MAAC Tournament will not be televised, but you can tune in to WQUN 1220 AM for the Rider game to get the call from Bill Schweizer, Bill Mecca and Bob Tipson.
