Game Notes
Quinnipiac | Manhattan
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team plays its final home game of the 2016 season when it hosts Manhattan on Sunday at 2 p.m., with Senior Day ceremonies preceding the game at 1:45 p.m. The program's three seniors: James Ford, Jr. (Hopewell, Va. - pictured), Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) and Will Simonton (Vienna, Va.) will be honored prior to the contest.
Quinnipiac will be looking to defend its home court again after a narrow 56-55 win over Saint Peter's on Thursday at the T.D. Bank Center. Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) broke the tie with a free throw with eight seconds left, and sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) sealed it with a blocked shot with 0.4 seconds left. Saint Peter's scored off the ensuing inbounds pass, but the shot was waved off after an official's review.
The first meeting with Manhattan saw the Jaspers come away with an 84-77 win in Riverdale. Quinnipiac led by 13 late in the first half, but the Jaspers closed it to nine at the break and started the second half on an 8-0 run. Manhattan went on to shoot over 70 percent in the second half to edge out in front and earn the home win, despite 5-5 shooting from three-point territory from junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.). That tied for the second-best single-game three-point performance in Quinnipiac's Division I history.
Quinnipiac has traditionally closed the season strong, compiling a 41-14 record in February since the 2009-10 season, although it is 3-4 since the start of the month this season. The Saint Peter's win snapped a four-game losing streak, which included a narrow loss to Manhattan and a double-overtime home defeat to Fairfield, which saw Daniels score a career-high 28 points in a losing cause.
Ford has been with the Bobcats the longest, as he will be finishing off a four-year career. He averages 6.8 points per game, but his big role is defensively, as he has helped hold the top five scorers in the MAAC to just 13.5 points per game on less than 30 percent shooting against Quinnipiac. That figure includes holding Manhattan's Shane Richards (17.6 ppg) to 12 points on 1-12 shooting in the first meeting.
After facing Manhattan, the Bobcats will close out the regular season with two road games next week, traveling to Marist on Friday and Siena on Sunday. Quinnipiac will then go back to Albany for the MAAC Tournament, beginning on March 3.
