Quinnipiac | Saint Peter's
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team begins its final week of home games when it hosts Saint Peter's on Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the second half of a doubleheader, after the Quinnipiac women's basketball team hosts Marist at 5 p.m. Both games will be shown on ESPN3 as part of the MAAC Game of the Week package.
The Bobcats have four games left in the regular season and will look to get some momentum going before the MAAC Tournament, which will be held in Albany from March 3-7. Quinnipiac (8-17, 5-11 MAAC) is on a four-game losing skid, which started with a loss at Saint Peter's on Feb. 8, which ended a three-game winning streak, and the Bobcats will hope that the rematch with the Peacocks will swing the team's momentum back in the other direction.
Sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn. - pictured) has been a bright spot in the last week, averaging 15.0 points over the last four games, including a 28-point outburst against Fairfield on Saturday. He also had 12 points in the first meeting with Saint Peter's, as he has gotten back into form after missing eight games with a knee injury earlier this year.
Daniels has also helped bolster a frontcourt that currently helps the Bobcats lead the nation in rebounding (45.0 rpg) and offensive rebounding (17.7 per game) by wide margins. Quinnipiac's offensive rebounding lead is currently 1.5 per game over second place West Virginia, which snapped a streak of four straight years for the Bobcats of leading the nation in offensive rebounding last season (when Quinnipiac finished second). Freshman forward Abdulai Bundu (Upper Marlboro, Md.) leads the MAAC in offensive rebounds per game (3.6) and ranks 23rd nationally, despite only playing 23.5 minutes per game. Quinnipiac also leads Texas-Arlington by 0.7 in total rebounds, giving it a healthy lead in two rebounding statistics, as the Bobcats will look to extend their streak of leading the nation in at least one rebounding category for each of the last five years.
The first meeting with Saint Peter's was a defensive battle that saw the Peacocks break the game open late. A lay-up from junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.) had the Bobcats within 53-52 with 3:30 to play, but Saint Peter's ended the game on a 15-0 run, including 8-8 at the foul line, to take a 68-52 win. Freshman guard Antwan Portley had 25 points in that game to lead the way, while Chazz Patterson hit a big three-pointer late to stretch the lead to six.
After facing Saint Peter's, Quinnipiac will play its final home game of the season when it entertains Manhattan on Sunday at 2 p.m., which will be Senior Day for the program's three seniors (James Ford, Jr., Giovanni McLean and Will Simonton).
