Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will complete a busy stretch of four games in one week, with three on the road, when it travels to New Rochelle to meet preseason MAAC favorite Iona on Monday night at 7 p.m. (ESPN3).
It has been a tough stretch for the Bobcats, who entered a road game at Saint Peter's on Monday with a three-game winning streak, but lost a tight one, then fell on the road to Manhattan on Thursday and fell in double-overtime at home to Fairfield on Saturday 84-80. Quinnipiac hit five pressure foul shots to force the two overtimes, with junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla. - pictured) going 3-3 to tie the game in regulation, and sophomore forward Chaise Daniels (Meriden, Conn.) hitting a pair at the end of the first overtime.
Leading by one in the second overtime, Fairfield earned two offensive rebounds in the last minute and converted an old-fashioned three-point play off the second one to push the lead to four and seal the game. Quinnipiac held a 60-31 rebounding edge for the game, including 11-2 in the two overtime sessions prior to the last sequence.
The Bobcats lead the nation in total rebounds (45.1) and offensive rebounds (17.8) by wide margins over Texas-Arlington (44.3) and West Virginia (16.2), respectively. Quinnipiac has led the nation in at least one rebounding category for five years in a row and appears on its way to making it six in a row. However, in the first meeting with Iona on Jan. 2, which the Gaels won 78-66, Iona held a 57-42 rebounding edge, the biggest deficit in Head Coach Tom Moore's nine seasons.
In fact, over those nine seasons, Quinnipiac has held a +10 or better rebounding margin a total of 107 times (in 275 total games), and a -10 or worse rebounding deficit or worse only twice, with the other one coming against Virginia Tech in the 2010 Postseason NIT. Since the start of the 2012-13 season, Quinnipiac is 107-6-4 in the rebounding department in 117 games, with Iona holding the edge on the boards two of those six times.
Harris has been one of the top weapons for the Bobcats lately, averaging 12.0 points since the start of the 2016 calendar year on 45.7 percent shooting from three-point territory. That figure includes a 5-5 effort in Thursday's loss at Manhattan, which tied for the second best single-game shooting performance from three in Quinnipiac's Division I history, behind only a 6-6 from Rashaun Banjo in 2002. One of the other players who has shot 5-5 from three for the Bobcats will be on the opposing bench, as Jared Grasso (5-5 vs. UMKC in 2000) is currently the associate head coach for the Gaels.
After facing Iona, Quinnipiac will play its final two home games this week when it hosts Saint Peter's on Thursday night at 8 p.m. and Manhattan on Sunday at 2 p.m. For ticket information, contact the TD Bank Sports Center Box Office at 203-582-3905 or visit us on line at QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
