Game Notes
Quinnipiac
HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac men's basketball team will try to complete a season sweep of in-state rival Fairfield when it hosts the Stags on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in a game that will be televised live on Sportsnet New York (SNY).
The first meeting less than two weeks ago came right down to the wire, as the Bobcats held on to earn a 64-59 win at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport on Feb. 1. Senior guard Giovanni McLean (Bronx, N.Y.) scored a career high 25 points in that contest, while sophomore guard Ayron Hutton (Virginia Beach, N.Y. - pictured) had two key defensive plays in the final minute, earning a steal with 35 seconds left with the Bobcats ahead by two and then harassing Fairfield's Marcus Gilbert into a desperation shot that hit the top of the backboard with Quinnipiac leading by three.
Quinnipiac held Gilbert to 11 points on only 2-10 shooting in that contest, which is one of many strong defensive efforts that the Bobcats have shown against the top scorers in the league. In fact, led by Hutton and senior guard James Ford, Jr., the top five scorers in the MAAC have combined to average only 12.5 points on 24.7 percent shooting in six contests against Quinnipiac, following a 1-12 shooting effort from Manhattan's Shane Richards on Thursday night. That total also includes two games against Monmouth's Justin Robinson, and one apiece against Iona's A.J. English and Marist's Khallid Hart.
Despite the 84-77 loss to Manhattan on Thursday, the Bobcats received another outstanding shooting effort from junior guard Daniel Harris (Tampa, Fla.), who was 5-5 on the night on three-pointers. It was the best single-game three-point performance in Head Coach Tom Moore's nine seasons, surpassing the 4-4 from Casey Cosgrove against Dartmouth in Moore's first season (2007-08). Since then, many players had been 3-3 from beyond the arc, most recently McLean against Niagara on Jan. 30.
Harris, who was 6-9 from three in that Niagara game as well, is now shooting just over 50 percent from beyond the arc in his last 13 games (38-75) to move up to fourth in the MAAC for the season at 42.2 percent, as well as eighth in three-pointers made (2.5). He has hit at least two three-pointers in 12 of his last 13 games and in 18 of 23 games this season.
