HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked Quinnipiac men's ice hockey lost to Princeton, 4-1, in an ECAC Hockey match-up at High Point Solutions Arena. With the loss, Quinnipiac falls to 10-7-2 overall and 6-4-1 in ECAC Hockey play while Princeton improves to 5-7-1 and 3-6-1 in league play.
Kevin Duane (New Canaan, Connecticut) scored for the third straight game, accounting for Quinnipiac's only marker of the contest. Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) and Landon Smith (Greenwood Village, Colorado) assisted on the goal.
Princeton's Max Veronneau staked the Tigers to an early 1-0 lead with his fifth goal of the season. After a defensive zone turnover by the Bobcats, Veronneau skated the length of the ice after picking up the puck just above the blue line. Holding the puck along the boards, Veronneau threw the puck on goal where it bounced off of a stick in front of the Quinnipiac goal and caromed past Chris Truehl to give Princeton a 1-0 lead.
With five minutes to play in the first period, Princeton benefitted from another favorable bounce, this time coming on the power play. Josh Teves fired a shot on goal from the point that sail wide and popped out on the other side of the net. Ryan Kuffner was waiting on the post and tipped it behind Truehl to give the Tigers a two-goal lead, which held until the first intermission.
Princeton's two-goal first period ended Quinnipiac starting goalie Chris Truehl's (Madison, Wisconsin) night early. Freshman Andrew Shortridge (Alaska, Anchorage) was called on, and stopped all six of Princeton's attempts in the second period.
Coming out of the intermission, Duane scored on a breakaway to cut Princeton's lead in half, 2-1. Landon Smith won the draw to Bo Pieper who immediately fed Duane taking off down ice. Duane skated between the face-off circles, faked to his back hand, and then roofed a shot bar-down on Colton Phinney to put the Bobcats on the board.
In the third, Princeton once-again capitalized on a Quinnipiac turnover when Max Becker took a feed from Jackson Cressey and scored from the slot to push Princeton's lead to 3-1. With two minutes to play, Princeton scored an empty-net goal for the second-straight night to improve to 4-1.
Quinnipiac will return to action at the Three Rivers Classic when hit faces Boston College on Friday, Dec. 29, followed by a match-up between Ferris State and Robert Morris.
