Merrimack Wins Shootout, Advances to 2016 Nutmeg Championship Game
HAMDEN, Conn. – No. 8/9 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey played to a 1-1 tie against Merrimack in the first round of the 2016 Nutmeg Classic on Friday afternoon at High Point Solutions Arena in Hamden. The Warriors won the shootout, advancing to the Nutmeg Classic Championship on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m.
With the tie, Quinnipiac moves to 10-4-3 (5-2-1 ECAC) on the season. Merrimack is now 4-10-2 (2-7-0 Hockey East). The loss ends the Bobcats' seven-game winning streak in the tournament, as Quinnipiac is now 14-9-2 in Nutmeg Classic history.
Kenzie Lancaster (Waxhaw, North Carolina) scored her sixth goal of the season in the tie. The sophomore intercepted a pass mid-ice, skated past two Merrimack defenders and blasted a wrist shot into the left side of the net to make it 1-0 Bobcats less than two minutes into the second period.
All of Lancaster's six career goals have come in the last nine games.
Merrimack would tie things up 12:13 into the third period, however, as Katelyn Rae chipped the puck into the zone and Paige Voight netted a breakaway chance to tie things 1-1.
The Warriors scored twice in the shootout, as Voight and Mikyla Grant-Mentis converted on chances to send Merrimack to the Nutmeg Championship for the first time in program history.
Quinnipiac recorded 44 shots in the tie, while Merrimack had only 12. The Bobcats killed off both of the Warriors power-play chances – which both came in the third stanza.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 25, playing the loser of Yale and UConn in the 2016 Nutmeg Classic Consolation game at 3 p.m.
