HAMILTON, New York – No. 4/6 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey rolled to a 7-3 win against Colgate in an ECAC Hockey match-up at the Class of 1965 Arena in Hamilton, New York. With the win, Quinnipiac improves to 9-3-1 overall and 5-1-0 in ECAC Hockey while Colgate drops to 3-5-5 overall and 2-3-1 in league play.
Six different Quinnipiac players posted multiple-point games, highlighted by a pair of two-goal nights from Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) and Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota). Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) and Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois) had three assists each while Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) had two assists. K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York), Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) and Bo Pieper (Roseville, Minnesota) all scored for the Bobcats while Tiefenwerth also added an assist.
Martin and Tim Clifton extend their team-leading point streaks to four games, with Clifton totaling four goals and two assists in his last four games and Martin posting two goals and four assists in the same span. In addition, Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) picked up his fourth consecutive win to improve to 7-2-1 overall and 4-1-0 in ECAC Hockey. Quinnipiac also allowed its first power play goal in six games after stopping the previous 31 power play opportunities. The Bobcats were also 2-for-7 on the power play to improve to 10-for-37 (27%) over their last six games.
Clifton's first goal came just inside the first four minutes of the game when Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) picked off a Colgate pass just below the Raiders' blue line. Davidson dropped the puck to Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) who threw the puck on goal, bouncing it off of Colgate goalie Charlie Finn's left pad. Clifton was crashing the crease and was able to push it under Finn. The goal was initially waved off but a video review confirmed it had crossed the goal line.
Two-minutes-and-five-seconds later Clifton scored his second of the game to push the Bobcats out in front, 2-0 in the game's first six minutes. Davidson carried the puck through the neutral zone and sent it to Karlis Cukste (Riga, Latvia) in the slot. Cukste became tied up and attempted to give the puck to Martin on the wing but the puck was knocked down in front of the goal. Clifton slid in behind the defense, dropped to a knee and blasted the puck through traffic, past Finn, to give the Bobcats a 2-0 lead.
With thirty-five seconds left in the first period, Colgate's Brett Corkey got the Raiders on the board with his third goal of the season. Adam Dauda won a draw in the Bobcats' defensive zone back to Corkey who one-timed a shot from the point that found its way through a host of bodies in front of Truehl to cut Quinnipiac's lead in half, 2-1, heading into the first intermission.
Coming out of the break, the Bobcats scored on the power play for the fourth straight game when K.J. Tiefenwerth (Bellmore, New York) tipped a shot from the point by Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois) who picked up his team-leading ninth assist of the year. Martin picked up the secondary assist after feeding Rafferty at the point.
The Bobcats pushed their lead to 4-1 on a play that started with Derek Smith (Apple Valley, Minnesota) making a beautiful cross-ice pass from blue line to blue to Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota). Schutt centered the puck to Tiefenwerth who touch-passed it back to Schutt behind the Colgate defense. Schutt's fourth goal of the year came on a wrist shot that beat Finn five-hole to give Quinnipiac a three-goal. Less than two minutes later, Colgate trimmed their deficit back to two goals when Jacob Panetta one-timed a pass from Jake Kulevich from the point.
Less than three minutes into the third period, Colgate's Tim Harrison potted his third of the year when he took a pass from Derek Freeman in the neutral zone, carried the puck up-ice and back-handed a shot on goal that snuck past Truehl to cut Quinnipiac's lead to 4-3.
Quinnipiac responded with back-to-back one-minute and twenty-seconds apart, both set up by Rafferty. Rafferty tipped a puck back into the Raider's defensive zone where it was pucked up by Schutt along the boards. Schutt turned and threw it on goal, clanging the shot off the far post and in to give Quinnipiac a 5-3 lead. Davidson then won a battle in the corner to the left of the Colgate goal and moved the puck up to Rafferty at the point. Rafferty zipped the puck across the blue line to Connor Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) who one-timed a shot through three Bobcat bodies screening Finn to give Quinnipiac a 6-3 lead with just under 14 minutes to play. Pieper added the Bobcat' seventh goal in the closing minutes, on the power play, off a rebound of a Thomas Aldworth (Keller, Texas) shot.
The Bobcats will head to Belfast, Northern Ireland to compete in the 2016 Friendship Four, featuring an ECAC Hockey match-up against St. Lawrence on Friday, Nov. 25. The winner of that game will face the winner of a Hockey East showdown between UMass and Vermont on Saturday, Nov. 26.
