CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – No. 8/8 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey topped Harvard, 2-1, in an ECAC Hockey contest on Saturday, Nov. 12, at Bright-Landry Hockey Center. Freshman Kati Tabin (Winnipeg, Manitoba) and junior Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) both scored in the third period to help the Bobcats complete the comeback win.
The Bobcats improve to 9-4-1 (4-2-0 ECAC) on the season with the victory, while Harvard falls to 1-4-0 (1-4-0 ECAC). Quinnipiac has now completed two weekend sweeps in conference play so far this year.
Quinnipiac held a 10-5 shots advantage through the first 20 minutes of play. The Bobcats had some good chances in the back-and-forth first period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. One of their best opportunities came with 8:10 left in the period, when senior captain Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) passed the puck in front of the net to Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout (Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec). Godbout, with space, attempted a one-timer that went wide to keep things tied.
The second period featured much of the same. Quinnipiac held a 13-3 edge in shots, but couldn't break through to take the lead. Woods and Cianfarano had a series of good chances with 11:25 left in the period, but Harvard goalie Brianna Laing stood strong.
Harvard broke the tie just 1:47 into the third period, as Val Turgeon found the back of the net for her second goal of the season to give the Crimson a 1-0 lead.
Tabin got the Bobcats on the board just 2:02 later, though, firing a shot from the point to make it 1-1. The goal is Tabin's second of the year. Her first career goal came last weekend on Nov. 4 vs. Clarkson.
Cianfarano was next, finding the back of the net on a power play chance just 1:46 after Tabin's goal to give Quinnipiac the 2-1 lead. Samoskevich skated up the left side of the ice and dumped the puck backward to Woods, who found Cianfarano with a cross-ice pass. Cianfarano held the puck for a moment, the blasted a wrist shot into the net for her team-leading 10th score of the year.
Cianfarano now has 97 career points with the goal– just three shy 100 during her junior season. Woods, who was given an assist on the play, now has 93 career points.
Quinnipiac goalie Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) made 11 saves in net. The Bobcats recorded 35 total shots - which ties a season-high.
Quinnipiac is back in action next weekend, hosting Cornell and Colgate from Nov. 18-19 at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden.
