HAMDEN, Connecticut - Nationally-ranked No. 7/8 Quinnipiac men's ice hockey defeated No. 10/10 Harvard, 4-2, in a pivotal ECAC Hockey match-up that was nationally-televised on SNY in HD in front of a capacity crowd of 3,520 at High Point Solutions Arena at the TD Bank Sports Center. With the win, the Bobcats improved to 7-3-1 overall and 3-1-0 in ECAC Hockey play. Harvard takes it first loss of the season to drop to 4-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league play.
Four different Quinnipiac players scored highlighted by power-play goals by Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois) and Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario) and including markers from Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) and an empty-netter in the closing seconds from Tommy Schutt (Chanhassen, Minnesota). Quinnipiac was 2-for-5 on the power play and is now 7-for-25 for a 28% clip over its last six games. In addition, the Bobcats were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill and now stand at 36-for-37 over its last six games. Quinnipiac is now 28-0-5 in its last 33 games at home in which it scores first.
In goal, Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin) stopped 30 of Harvard's 32 shots on goal to improve to 5-2-1 for the season.
Freshman stand-out Brogan Rafferty (Dundee, Illinois) scored on the power play for his second goal of the season to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead just over a minute into the game. Tim Clifton (Matawan, New Jersey) dug the puck out from behind the Bobcats' goal and cycled the puck to Chase Priskie (Pembroke Pines, Florida) on the wing. Priskie centered a pass to Rafferty at the point who walked between the face-off circles and blasted a shot on goal.
Harvard tied the game just under the nine minute mark when Luke Esposito held the puck in the face-off circle to the left of Quinnipiac goalie Chris Truehl (Madison, Wisconsin). Esposito dropped a pass to Alexander Kerfoot, who was stationed behind Truehl, before Kerfoot slid a pass out in front of the Bobcats goal for Viktor Dombrovsky. Dombrovskiy looked off a Quinnipiac before wristing a shot on goal that beat Truehl and tied the game at 1-1.
Harvard's Sean Malone gave the Crimson the lead just 24 seconds into the second period. Malone took a feed from Tyler Moy before throw a back-hand shot on Truehl. Truehl denied it, but Malone picked up his own rebound and followed with another backhand goal to give Harvard a 2-1 lead.
The Bobcats answered later in the period with back-to-back goals from Craig Martin (Trail, British Columbia) and Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario). Martin's third goal of the year came on a pass from Scott Davidson (Trail, British Columbia) that led to a wrist shot that slid between Merrick Madsen's pad and blocker to tie the game at 2-2.
With less than three minutes to play Andrew Taverner (Edmonton, Alberta) stole the puck on a pass behind Harvard's net and centered a pass to Shiplo in the slot who scored on the power play to give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead. Schutt's empty-net goal came with 24 seconds left after he made a play in the Bobcats defensive zone, poked it around a defender and then made a diving bid at the puck just over the red line.
Quinnipiac is back in action when it travels to Cornell on Friday, Nov. 18 and Colgate on Nov. 19. Quinnipiac will then head to Belfast, Northern Ireland to compete in the 2016 Friendship Four with an opening round game against St. Lawrence that will count as an ECAC Hockey regular-season game. UMass and Vermont will play in the other Friendship Four match-up on Friday, Nov. 25.
