BUFFALO, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Rashawn Dally (Bloomfield, Conn.) scored 4:19 into the first overtime as the Quinnipiac men's soccer team defeated Canisius 1-0 on the road on Saturday evening.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 7-5 on the season and 3-1 in the MAAC with their third straight win, tying with Monmouth for first place. Canisius, which was remarkably the last unbeaten team in the MAAC after only two weeks of conference play, falls to 5-5-1 overall and 1-1-1 in league play.
The short overtime period actually began with Canisius on the front foot, as Matthew Santos had a shot in the first minute of the extra session that was saved by freshman goalkeeper Chrysostomos Iakovidis (Thessaloniki, Greece). Eric Strauchen missed high for the Golden Griffins 30 seconds later, and Lucien Press missed wide three minutes into the extra session.
The Bobcats withstood the early pressure, though, and capitalized on their first chance of the extra session at the other end. Senior defender Liam O'Sullivan (Trumbull, Conn.) set the play up, and Dally was able to pounce on a rebound in the box to slot home his first goal of the season to end the contest and vault Quinnipiac up into a share of the MAAC lead.
During regulation, the best chance for the Bobcats came in the 70th minute as freshman forward Eamon Whelan (New Fairfield, Conn.) hit the post. Whelan was coming off a two-goal performance in Wednesday's 4-0 win over Manhattan and nearly made it three goals in two games, but was denied by the woodwork.
Canisius also was denied by the post in the first half, as Strauchen nearly put the Golden Griffins ahead 1-0 in the 37th minute. Freshman defender Conor McCoy (Newry, Northern Ireland) had a bid for a header in the first half for the Bobcats, but was denied by a save from Golden Griffin goalkeeper Marco Trivellato.
The Bobcats finished with a 20-18 edge in shots, although neither team had much success putting its shots on frame. Iakovidis finished with three saves to get the shutout for the Bobcats, while Trivellato had three saves for the Golden Griffins.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Iona for a 2 p.m. contest.
